Cue my thoughts on Cue the Sun!
This book by Pulitzer Prize winner Emily Nussbaum, which I read on my recent vacation, traces the invention and evolution of reality television from the 1940s through 2007-ish. Nussbaum shows a through-line from shows like “Candid Camera” and “The Newlywed Game” to “An American Family,” “The Real World,” “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and a number of other pivotal series.
What I admired most is that this is the kind of book I’d like to write about the teen drama genre. (Interestingly enough, there are actually three mentions in the book of “Beverly Hills, 90210” that I won’t spoil, as well as one mention of “The O.C.”) I loved the way Nussbaum kept connecting newer iterations in the genre to what came before, highlighting the threads, commonalities and innovations.
My only critique is that I wish Nussbaum’s look at the genre didn’t stop at 2007 but continued through the reality TV of today. With “The Apprentice” as the final show examined, Nussbaum did make plenty of post-2007 references to Donald Trump’s presidency, etc., but I was left hungry for her examination of the key reality shows that have emerged in the last 15-plus years.
In any case, if you’re looking for a scholarly but immensely readable look at how the reality TV genre unfolded (hint: It actually began on radio!), I highly recommend Cue the Sun!
