REACTION: 9021OMG Episode 14
The 12th episode of “Beverly Hills, 90210” was the subject of Monday’s “9021OMG” podcast — along with a surprise guest.
Called “One Man and a Baby” (yes, in a nod to Three Men and a Baby), in this episode Brandon (Jason Priestley) meets a fellow West Bev student, Melissa (Kristin Dattilo), who has an infant son named Joey. He embarks on a relationship with her anyway, but finds himself in a bit over his head when he has to care for the baby alone. Meanwhile, Brenda (Shannen Doherty) and Kelly (Jennie Garth) win a radio contest for which the prize is skydiving lessons.
This episode, which was written by Amy Spies and show creator Darren Star with direction by Burt Brinckerhoff, was covered on the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show” podcast back in November. Not only did Dattilo participate, but Daniel Van Duzer — one of the twins who played the baby almost exactly 20 years ago — amusingly joined in too.
Notably, Donna (Tori Spelling) doesn’t appear in this episode, and Dylan, Andrea, David, and Scott are MIA too. That made me all the more curious for Tori and Jennie’s comments. And what about that surprise guest? Well…
9021OMG Episode 14, “Feet, a Boom Mic, and a Baby”
Tori: “It’s another week of us — your favorite girls!”
After chit-chat about how time does and doesn’t pass amidst the pandemic, Jennie said, “We have another exciting episode to talk about, you guys.”
Jennie gave the episode title, air date, and synopsis.
Tori said her daughter Stella is “best friends” with Kristin’s daughter “all these years later,” something she sees as a “full-circle moment” since this episode dealt with Kristin’s character having a baby.
Jennie called it a “really good” episode and said she “forgot” to mention it was written by Amy and Darren.
That’s now three weeks in a row of them giving credit to the episode’s writer(s). I wonder if that’s something they had gotten feedback on.
Jennie: “It had a lot of meaningful, sensitive moments for me. Just seeing Brandon with a baby is so cute.”
Jennie: “Brandon hits on every girl he sees.” Tori: “He’s a teen boy. That’s what they do. That’s their job!” Jennie: “He’s so good at it, it’s like a natural instinct.”
Sisanie “loved” the episode and “how mature Brandon treated the situation with the baby.” But she also found it “funny how clueless” they made him be and was amused by Melissa “just trusting him” with the baby.
Sisanie said she would never trust her 16-year-old nephew with her twins but definitely would her 13-year-old niece. Tori: “Let’s face it: We just trust a woman over a man.”
They all agreed that women, even as little girls, have natural “maternal instincts.”
Jennie couldn’t remember Melissa’s name and said she “felt bad” that the character “didn’t have anyone else to go to” for help being a teen mom.
They laughed over Melissa just handing the baby over in a “Moses basket” to Brandon.
Tori: “She’s lucky she got Brandon Walsh — do-good male of all time.”
Jennie shared a short (scary) story about her oldest daughter Lucabella falling out of a “Moses basket” while in dad Peter Facinelli’s care while Jennie was shooting the show.
Jennie: “Oh, you guys, okay, this is a little inside thing: When I was watching this episode...” she noticed the boom mic in the shot. Sisanie and Tori missed it. Jennie: “I love when that happens.”
Jennie asked Tori if she remembered the sound guys on the show and they named some of them. Jennie: “They were characters, man. And they would fight... We would all just stand there and wait it out... There was more sound-man drama than there was actor drama.” Tori called this “the behind the scenes of the behind the scenes.”
Superfan Sisanie wanted to know how the boom gaffe didn’t get caught. Of course, if she was a real superfan, she’d know the show is kind of notorious for having boom mics appear in shots in the first two seasons especially, so much so that it’s been discussed multiple times with the producers on the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show” podcast.
Jennie said she “loves watching” for boom shots, continuity issues, etc., in whatever she’s watching. Tori noted there’s websites for continuity issues and said Jennie should join them.
Sisanie brought up the infamous coffee cup incident on “Game of Thrones.” Tori said she’s never watched it and Jennie said she watched it all by herself because no one wanted to watch it with her. Tori: “I would’ve watched it with you.”
Jennie: “Speaking of websites, I heard that there’s a website about your feet.” She was referring to the site wikiFeet, on which there are apparently hundreds of photos of Tori’s feet.
Tori wondered how many photos of Jennie’s feet are on there and said she “has really good feet.” Jennie said she didn’t want to talk about it, but then said her husband told her her feet have their own Instagram account.
Sisanie looked Jennie up on the site and saw she has a five-star rating for her feet, which prompted Tori to say of Jennie, “She’s always very concerned what rating we have on our show ‘cause you can give us stars. Please do give us five stars for our podcast.”
Tori: “Jennifer Eve Garth, you are just winning in the feet department. She does have great feet. I love her feet. But I’m glad to know that others love your feet. I’m not sure — don’t quote me on this — but I think people might look at these photos for indecent reasons.” Jennie: “Like foot festish people?”
Jennie: “Well, listen, if my feet make you happy, I’m happy for you.”
Tori: “I don’t even know how to get back to the episode after going through that. I’m not even sure what to do at this point, except maybe, Sis, we should take a break. I don’t know what to do now.”
No kidding.
Sisanie: “Yeah, there’s more to discuss, ‘cause we need to get to Kelly and Brenda’s skydiving and that whole part of the episode. Also, we have somebody waiting right now in our Zoom waiting room. So I think we should take a break and come back with Douglas Emerson.”
After the break, Sisanie declared, “Well, we’re back. He is best known as David Silver’s childhood friend on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210,’ Scott Scanlon. We have him right now, Douglas Emerson.”
Of course we couldn’t see him, or any of them, but Jennie exclaimed, “I miss that smile! Look at that smile! You’re all grown up now. That must mean we’re all grown up.” Tori: “30 years, baby. It is what it is.” Douglas: “It is what it is, but it’s been great.”
Tori pointed out that Douglas is younger than them... but he’s a measly one year younger than her. Still, she insisted, “That year’s a lot.”
Jennie: “Douglas, you went on to have a really amazing, adventurous life since we’ve seen you. I was reading and catching up with what’s been going on with you and you were in the Air Force.”
Douglas: “I went to college, I met my wife, I joined the Air Force... I got to have an extraordinary experience... Now I’m just a working guy, just a normal dude.” Jennie: “You’re a civilian again.” Douglas: “Yes, ma’am.”
Douglas said his daughters are 21 and 23 and Jennie congratulated him.
Jennie: “Would you say being on our show, do you feel that was, I don’t know, do you look back on that fondly?” Douglas: “Oh, absolutely. Most certainly. How could I not? It’s a very, very special part of my life.”
Jennie: “Do your daughters know about it?” Douglas: “Most certainly, yeah. At times embrace it, they largely embrace it, and sometimes they may be a little embarrassed by it. It’s just kind of funny because that’s not a part of my life that they ever knew. It’s interesting. I think they’re very proud of me and I’m super-thankful for that.
Douglas guessed his daughters watched the show around when they were 15-19 and Tori wondered if kids at school said anything to them about their dad being Scott.
Douglas: “I believe they largely didn’t know... Because it hasn’t been a part of my life since then. It’s something I’m probably a little too close-hold about because it doesn’t really have a bearing on what I do now.”
Jennie said Douglas’ mom “told a little birdie that maybe you might’ve had a crush on Miss Spelling at one point.” Douglas laughed and said, “I believe that. I think that’s actually been in print somewhere. And I’m sure there’s a bit of truth to that. We were very good friends. We were very close friends.”
Tori: “We were. We were all the OGs. We all started at the same time, but Doug and Brian and I were the youngest. We had a lot of our stuff together, so the three of us were tight and always together.”
And yet they never act like Douglas is part of the “OGs.”
I would hardly say Tori, Brian, and Douglas had “a lot” of scenes together.
Tori said she had “different worlds” because she wanted to be with those her age (Brian and Douglas) and with the “cool kids” (the others).
Tori told Douglas, “I loved hanging out with you.” Douglas: “I enjoyed having you and Brian very much. Just to do stuff away from set and away from work too was a lot of fun... I appreciated that. Having genuine friendships I remember especially fondly.”
Jennie said she was “getting emotional.”
Tori said she would “confide” in Douglas and that he was “always kind” while Brian would “tease” her.
Jennie: “Nobody could be Scott but you.” Tori: “Now that we’re rewatching the show, we keep saying, ‘He’s so cute, he's so handsome!’”
Jennie acknowledged that when the show was shot, Kelly didn’t have much to do with David or Scott at that point in the series so she wasn’t paying much attention, but said she “loves” watching Scott now. She even said she was “sorry” for seemingly not taking notice back then, but Douglas assured her she was “always so kind.”
Douglas recalled taking his wife and daughter to visit a shoot where only Jennie and Luke were filming and said she was “nothing but kind.”
Based on his daughters’ ages, that had to be during season 9 or 10.
Douglas said that when he shares stories with people about his time on the show, they’re “awe-struck” and in shock that he knows the cast, and he thinks he may have taken his time on the show and his experience with all of them a little bit for granted.
Douglas: “I consider myself very fortunate to be able to vouch for you all being generous, nice, kind people.”
Tori said it’s “interesting” rewatching the show with “adult eyes” and “as fans” — “taking ourselves out of it as much as we can” — and said she’s “super-interested” in watching David and Scott. She said that instead of making David part of the main group and “aging [him] up,” she wishes they continued following “the younger storyline because it would’ve been something for everyone.”
Jennie agreed, saying that having David and Scott as the younger characters gave a “glimpse at the reality of the world we were all in” and reminded her of those nerdy, younger roles in ‘80s rom-coms.
Douglas admitted “it was a bummer to be a bit of a more nerdy character. It’s more fun to be the studly hero, you know. But my character in myself, my own personality, are very much not that anyways.” Jennie: “C’mon, you’re the studly hero!” Tori: “You pretty much are! Fact! In real life.”
Douglas said that it was “kind of nice,” though, to represent that kind of character because others like that in high school could identify with him.
Tori said Douglas was “so adorable” as Scott and that “looking at it from an outside perspective, there’s nothing nerdy about that character. In fact, I would definitely go for a Scott Scanlon over a Steve Sanders in high school.” Douglas: “I’m lucky my wife did as well.” Tori: “So it all worked out.”
Tori asked Douglas what he remembered about meeting the cast.
Douglas said he originally auditioned for David and had met Ian through the process and seen Jason. He had already known Brian from past auditions over the years and thought it was “nice” that Brian beat him for the part of David because you can be “happy” for someone you’re friendly with.
Douglas was then brought back to read for Scott, he said. Jennie speculated, “Maybe they just loved you so much that they wrote” a character for him.
Douglas said the role of Scott was originally supposed to be recurring, but they made it a series regular for the first season: “You can’t get any more lucky or blessed than that.”
Douglas recalled Aaron Spelling personally offering him the part and telling him in response, “Mr. Spelling, I would be honored to come work for you.” He went on to say of Aaron, “I’m so thankful he gave me the opportunity to work with you all.”
Tori told Douglas, “I know he loved you. He thought you were so talented and a great kid. He would always say, ‘He's a great kid!’” Douglas loved that.
Jennie wanted to know if Douglas remembered the “madness of filming” at Torrance and “being thrown into” all the chaos of the regular students there “like pieces of meat.”
Douglas said he did remember and called it “weird that we were in a real high school when they were having classes,” especially since he was still in high school himself.
Douglas went on, “It’s weird to film on a live set that way, when you have bells ringing and you have 600 students walking across each way and they’re kind of closing down very specific areas so they’re not in shots.”
Douglas also brought up the hallway set at the studio and how it was made to look like multiple different hallways, calling it “fun to reflect back on.”
Jennie wanted to know if anything happened on set to made him want to “get out of the business and live a normal life.”
Douglas insisted, “No, to the contrary. I loved my time. I started working when I was 4. Got the show, or started to work on the show, the pilot, was 14 and a half, 15-ish. Turned 16 — Tori, I can forever thank you for giving me one of the most wonderful birthdays.”
That last part greatly sparked Jennie and Sisanie’s interest, leading Douglas to explain, “It was a lot of gifts. It was a lot of fanfare and it really made it a 16th birthday. It was fun. It meant a lot to me. As close as we were as friends, she gave me a very special bracelet... To work on set and be 16 and work that day, it was really cool.”
Jennie confirmed it is indeed “fun to work on your birthday.”
Douglas went on to say that he learned through the show how to work with an ensemble cast and be the “younger player,” witnessed leadership skills, and experienced teamwork that he was able to later apply to “different endeavors” outside of acting.
Tori wanted to know what it was like for Douglas with “the guys,” especially since, according to her, Brian has said he didn’t feel he fit in with the older guys during those early years.
Douglas pointed out that not only was he the youngest and still in school, but he also had to have a parent on set, “which was good and different.”
Jennie and Tori were in awe over Douglas needing his mom to drive him to and from work every day. Tori said his mother was “such a huge part of my childhood.”
Douglas reiterated how he would hang out with Brian and Tori and could be “peers” with them.
Jennie: “We want to know if you will come back and talk to us again for your big episode in season 2. That was a very important episode for the show.” Tori: “We don’t want to spoil it for everyone that’s for the first time perhaps watching along with us, so we’ll just say it’s a very important episode and we would love to have you back because it’s fun catching up with you.”
Douglas: “It would be my pleasure. Thank you very much for asking me.”
After a break, Jennie declared, “We have a lot to say about that interview. He is so adorable.”
Tori: “Wait, you guys, I'm having feelings here. Maybe I screwed up my life path, like my journey, falling for the bad boy, the one that would tease me, and falling for Brian. I should’ve fallen for Doug. He was like my best friend and he was so sweet and kind to me and we laughed and we had so much in common. I blew it.”
Tori said she didn’t remember at first doing something for his 16th birthday but it “came back” to her as he spoke about it. She thought he was going to say she gave him a kiss. “At that moment, I was into it. I was listening. I would’ve been okay.”
Sisanie: “He liked you.” Jennie: “He is a doll. I think you did make a mistake. I’m gonna go on record.” Tori: “I was a typical teenage girl and didn’t go for the nice guy. If we all looked back and went for the nice guy, we would save ourselves years of heartbreak growing up if we had just done it the right way then.”
Jennie asked Tori, however, if she would’ve been okay being a “military wife” and having a “normal civilian situation.” Tori seemed to hesitate and then said, "Well, I didn’t go on to end up with Brian... I guess not... I’m just saying it would’ve been a nice experience, I think, because he would’ve been good to me and loving to me.”
Jennie said Douglas reminded her of her nephew who is in the military and it was “tripping me out — just the manners, the vocabulary, the gratitude, just the depth of the person.”
Jennie asked if Tori agreed with her, because Tori met this nephew backstage on their tour — and then it was revealed that Tori apparently flashed him during that meeting.
Jennie: “I think you were putting your Spanx on and things got a little... yeah. He saw some things he can’t unsee.” Tori: “Poor guy. If he didn’t already have PTSD from the life he’s lived in the military, I surely did it.” Jennie: “We did some damage that night. But he still loves me so I’m pretty sure he still loves you.”
Sisanie: “Can we talk about Brenda and Kelly?”
I dunno, Sis, can we?
Sisanie: “First of all, Donna was not in this episode.” Jennie to Tori: “Wait, what the heck? I thought you said there was only one episode out of all the 10 years that you weren’t in and that's already happened. We saw that. That’s when you got your nose job.”
Tori: “I can only go by what Darren Martin, our biggest fan, tells me because he knows every stat about everything of ‘90210’ and I thought he told me I only missed one episode. But clearly...” Jennie: “I didn’t see ya in this episode anywhere and I looked.” Tori: “I looked, too, believe me! I feel like I must’ve been in a scene and it got cut or something. Why would I not be in this episode?”
Uh, for the same reason Andrea, Dylan, David, and Scott weren’t in this episode either. But their absences weren’t acknowledged by them.
Tori: “Was I missed?” Jennie: “Yes, you were missed.” Tori: “Okay, fine. Let’s move on.”
Jennie thought Kelly and Brenda had a “fun storyline” and said she loves “when the show does fun things.”
Jennie went on, “Yeah, the show tackled a lot of important topics and talked about heavy things at times, but I really love it when the show is fun and you see the characters goofing off, even with Brandon and Steve and the baby scene and them trying to put the diaper on the baby. I love that. And then the Brenda-Kelly on the radio guessing-game.”
Jennie asked if they ever called into a radio show like that. Sisanie and Tori had, but she hadn’t. Jennie then joked, “So many things I did as Kelly that I didn’t do in real life.”
Tori said as a kid she won a turkey through the TV news once... and gave it to her nanny.
Sisanie thought the radio contest was “very accurate,” but called the prize “so crazy.” She noted, “I don’t think, legally, we would ever give away skydiving.”
Jennie recalled filming the scene where they had to give the song titles “and even when I was saying it, I had no idea what that song was or that band was that I was talking about.”
Sisanie: “It was cute seeing you guys jump out of the plane, though.”
Shockingly, it was Tori, not superfan Sisanie, who thought Jennie and Shannen really went skydiving for the scene. Jennie had Tori going for a bit too.
Sisanie: “How do you not know, Tori?” Tori said that until she watched the episode, she didn’t even remember the storyline happening.
Probably because you weren’t in the episode...
Jennie brought up the “hottie” skydiving instructor, prompting Tori to deadpan, “Shocking — Brenda likes an older man.” Jennie: “He was likable, let me tell ya.” Tori: “Brenda and her older men.”
Jennie marveled over herself wearing a denim shirt as they recorded the podcast since Kelly wore one in the episode.
Sisanie asked if either of them have ever gone skydiving and they both were adamantly against it. Jennie is scared of heights and Tori is scared of “falling.”
Sisanie, who’s done it once, insisted it’s “fun” and “would recommend it.” Jennie: “And you survived, clearly, so that’s good.”
Tori was anxious just listening to Sisanie recount her experience. Jennie: “These two broads don’t like the heights.”
That made me laugh since Jamie Walters starred on Aaron’s show “The Heights” before “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
Tori’s also against roller coasters. Jennie said she used to like them when she was younger, “but now, no freakin’ way.” And if they had to ride one for a role, they said they would turn the part down or get a stunt double.
Tori was pretty upset just talking about it while Sisanie was pretty amused.
Wait til they get to the Magic Mountain episode.
Jennie then quipped that they’ll ride a roller coaster for their new show... which makes me wonder what the premise of their apparent new show is, especially since Tori at this point reminded Jennie that that’s the “one thing” she said she wouldn’t do.
Will it be a reality show filming them going on “adventures” together? Hmm.
There was a giggling fit, amidst which Jennie said, “Oh, you guys, back to the baby in the episode... I’d like to talk to that baby now because poor thing was like traumatized. They made it cry a lot and the way they were holding it and masking-taping it and feeding it things they shouldn’t.”
Just watch the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show” podcast, folks... been there, done that.
Jennie was also appalled that Melissa took Brandon into the baby’s room while he was sleeping and turned on the light. Tori: “You have to when you’re filming a TV show so the audience can see what’s happening.”
Jennie: “Ooh, let’s talk about fashion!” She said Brenda and Kelly’s purple spandex was “not to be forgotten” and quipped that the helmets were “extremely flattering.”
Tori: “Not many big fashion moments because I wasn’t in the episode!” Sisanie said it was a “touchy subject” and Tori said they should ask “Chuck Rosin” why she wasn’t in the episode.
Superfan Sisanie then changed the subject, bringing up Brandon wearing a sports coat on his date and questioning the style. Tori: “Maybe it’s just a Brandon thing.” Sisanie: “Maybe, but you guys are 16.”
Jennie agreed with Sisanie, who further said, “Is that just a disconnect? No offense to the, you know, fashion team.” Tori suggested that style was “in” then.
Sisanie’s favorite line of the episode was Kelly saying to Brandon, “Cut the small talk. You’re giving her too much time to think.”
Jennie liked Cindy talking to Melissa at the end and saying to her, “The question is, what do you want?” Jennie said it’s a question she still asks herself and that she was just talking to her therapist about it.
Tori: “I know that I want to go to questions from the listeners!”
A fan named Jen wanted to know, “Was there ever a storyline or a new character — not actor — that you didn’t like and wished had gone a different way? If so, what or who was it? Did you ever try to alter a storyline or were you allowed to?”
Tori thought it was a “cool question.”
It’s certainly come up on the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show” podcast a few times.
Tori compared it to “choose your own adventure” stories and said, “Imagine if we could’ve altered storylines and taken them a different direction?” Jennie: “Who knows where the show would’ve gone. It would’ve gone off the rails, I know that.”
Jennie says they were “never given that license or that freedom to change anything, really, so I don’t think we altered a storyline in any way.”
Tori said she thought Donna and Ray were a “great couple” and “not that they would’ve ended up together — because obviously she was always supposed to be with David — but Jamie Walters was so great and so talented and I feel like the writers and producers had no idea. They were trying to do a storyline about what happens in an abusive relationship. I didn’t think they thought America would literally turn on the character of Ray and they would have to take him off the show. So I wish that had gone a different way because I thought he was a great part of the show and I felt bad.”
Uh, it’s not really producers’ fault. According to my 2010 interview with executive producer Larry Mollin, it was Aaron who insisted they get rid of Jamie, even though they had a redemption storyline planned for his character and had just signed him to a new deal.
Jennie: “He’s so cute and he could sing too. Two for one.” Tori: “So dreamy. We had a musician on the show. It was cool and what a bummer that everyone turned on him, the fans, and they had to take him off the show. It sucked.”
Blaming the fans? Yikes...
Jennie then brought up John Sears and said, “I remember it not being a great experience and perhaps persuading or begging for him to not be Kelly’s love interest at a certain point. Do you recall that at all?”
John was played by Paul Johansson (Dan, One Tree Hill), who was on the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show” podcast not that long ago and he and the producers had nothing but good things to say. I’m fairly certain she’s mixed up (surprise, surprise) and thinking of Dalton James, who played Mark in season 7. That issue is also detailed in my aforementioned interview with Larry linked above.
As for Paul, Tori said said she remembered that he was “good friends” with Jason and it was the “older guys... always going out, hanging out” so they didn’t spend much time together.
Tori: “To be honest, I don’t know what went on there.” Jennie: “I don’t either and I really wish I did.” Tori: “Someone must know.” Jennie: “Maybe he knows. Maybe we should ask.”
OOH, ME, PICK ME, PICK ME! I KNOW! PICK ME!
Tori: “We should have Paul on. Wasn’t that his name? Paul?” Jennie: “Paul Johansson, I think.” Tori: “We have to have him on. Because that is a running thing, because we know there was something with John Sears, but we don’t know what went down.” Jennie: “Yeah, was it Kelly and John? Or was it Jennie and Paul? I need to know.”
Yeah, I’m sure he wants to come on now, after you falsely accuse him of being the actor you had an issue with.
The second fan comment was from someone pretty much correcting Tori for wrongly claiming in a prior installment that Donna never called Mrs. Teasley “Mrs. T.” Tori: “So the lesson of this story is I was wrong.”
See, I’m not the only one who feels the need to correct them!
And yes, Tori, you were wrong, just like you were wrong about only missing one episode and just like you’re wrong now about John Sears / Paul.
Tori: “We depend on our fans, though. 10 years — we were in it. When you’re in it, sometimes you don’t remember what was really going on because we didn’t watch it from your perspective. Now we are.”
Jennie: “Yes, and we love it. We love the questions and we love the comments, so keep them coming because it’s fun for us to hear from you guys.”
Sisanie: “And give us five stars, like Tori and Jennie’s feet on wikiFeet.” Tori: “Please, please give us five stars.” Jennie: “Or five feet.”
Sisanie: “Ladies, we have to plug the live show that’s coming up.”
It took them more than 50 minutes to promote their event that’s coming up NEXT WEEK. Goodness.
Tori: “Obviously we wish we could be with you all in person, but hey, this is the next best thing. You actually get to watch us do the podcast, talk about the episode. It’s gonna be really fun.”
Jennie: “We’re gonna give stuff away, probably, and have special guests.” Tori: “Make sure you get your tickets!” Jennie: “There’s still tickets!”
Jennie: “We should mention that a portion of the proceeds will go to Save Our Stages, which is a great initiative that’s working to help local music venues stay afloat during these times.”
Sisanie: “So get your tickets. Get the merch.”
Tori: “Get your merch and send us pictures... we want to see you in our gear.”
Jennie asked Sisanie what the next episode is and when she said “Slumber Party,” Tori gasped — and then WRONGLY said, “Slumber party! Enter John Sears! It's like kismet! We were talking about him.”
Jennie: “He’s in that episode? Tori: “That’s the first time you talk about John Sears because you tell us a story.” Jennie: “Are you sure? Oh my goodness, I can’t wait to watch it now to see.” Tori: “One of the best Kelly Taylor scenes in ‘90210’ history. We will be talking about it next week. Very excited.”
Tori is confusing John Sears — who appears in season 4 — with Ross Webber, who is mentioned in season 1 and appears in season 8. I CAN'T.
Like, I really can’t. I’d say more about the “John Sears” confusion, but I’m too annoyed. So I’ll just move on and say… Good lord, was this installment disjointed! It was a pretty random choice to have Douglas on the podcast this week when he had nothing to do with the episode at hand. Why not wait for an episode where Scott actually has a storyline or even his final episode? And if you were going to bring him on today, why do it right in the middle of your discussion of this episode? Why start discussing this episode, barely even get into Brandon’s storyline, then bring on Scott for a completely unrelated discussion, and then go back to discussing the episode and Brenda’s storyline?
Just when it seems they’re developing some structure and minimizing the tangents — as seemed to be the case last week — they do an edition like this where they’re all over the place. It’s really mind-boggling and frustrating. If this had to be the week that Douglas was interviewed, they simply should’ve started out with him and then dived into the episode or vice versa. Instead we got this mish-mash. And frankly, they should know better. They should know how to structure a show at this point, both from their decades in the industry and from doing this podcast for months now. Like… get it together and KEEP it together. (“Beverly Hills, 90210” reference not intended.)
Anyway, I finally bought my ticket for next week’s live podcast. I’ll be taking notes, but I’m not sure my reaction post — which I’ll publish later that same night — will be as detailed as usual. When I listen to the normal podcast, I am always pausing and rewinding so I can make note of every little thing (these posts take me hours — no joke). That’ll be virtually impossible with a live event. Although, now that I think about, when I used to live-blog “One Tree Hill,” “Gossip Girl,” and “90210” for the original TeenDramaWhore.com, I was still able to get quite a bit of detail in despite the time crunch. So we’ll see how I do… and more importantly, we’ll see how Jennie and Tori do. I really can’t imagine what it’ll be like at this point.
So, on that note, see you guys next Wednesday night! I should probably take Xanax beforehand…
