REACTION: Gossip Girl Spinoff Episode 2.06
The “Gossip Girl” spinoff continued with its second season on Thursday with a character’s long-awaited return. But was it worth the wait?
Episode 2.06 is titled, “How to Bury a Millionaire.” The official synopsis says, “As Max obsessively preps for his parents’ vow renewal, a familiar figure blackmails Kate into ruining the nuptials. When her activity in Philadelphia risks getting leaked, Zoya reluctantly turns to Monet for help. Obie ponders implicating his family to Gossip Girl, while Julien’s new paramour reveals his true intentions.”
The episode was written by Kelli Breslin and directed by Satya Bhabha.
Gossip Girl Spinoff Episode 2.06, “How to Bury a Millionaire”
That opening Max-Audrey scene made me wish Max and Audrey were a couple and not a throuple.
The wedding venue manager is named Catherine when Audrey’s mom is named Katherine… ? I mean, she’s often called Kiki, but still.
I didn’t expect Zoya using Monet’s name in the last episode to come back and have a consequence.
The bitch is back. And it seems I was right about her being Mike’s benefactor.
So that WAS Zoya’s first time…
Nelly Yuki is back!
Whatever Graham’s secret is, it’s not that he’s still with his wife AND she’s pregnant. Surely there’s a true twist coming.
Like Zoya reaching out to Milo for help. That’s a twist.
Love those pictures of Dan and Serena in the background.
Love learning Derena has a kid.
“Let’s fuck shit up.” Good line, good delivery. Something they probably would’ve loved Georgina to be able to say on the original series.
If Georgina is sending Kate off to do whatever, why can’t Kate just escape? Leave the venue and, I dunno, disappear forever.
LOL at “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
Kate looks beautiful at the wedding with her hair like that and the eyeliner.
I also enjoyed her earlier look at Derena’s place, in Serena’s dress no less.
Boom: Graham’s “wife” is his sister. The pregnant wife angle was just too obvious.
So Georgina wanted to ruin Roy and Gideon’s wedding for no other reason than to test Kate? It had nothing to do with Max’s family personally? I would’ve preferred there to be a connection.
Are they really trying to semi-redeem a kid who made a secret sex tape? I guess they’ve tried to redeem worse. See: Chuck.
Another episode ending on the Kate storyline… blech.
The episode’s synopsis about a “familiar figure,” plus the fact that this wasn’t one of the episodes initially screened for critics before the season started, were huge clues that this would be the episode where Georgina finally appeared. Was it worth the wait? Meh. I don’t think her arrival was as big or as groundshaking as it should’ve been. And what is her ultimate endgame? Her supposed desire to use Gossip Girl to a fuller potential feels like small potatoes and kinda boring.
I wasn’t surprised by Graham’s “true intentions.” After last week’s episode, in which he tried to tell Julien something after she mentioned her dad, I figured that Graham, being a musician and all, was in interested in Davis, with him being a music producer and all. I just didn’t expect Graham’s interest to be on his sister’s behalf. I’m glad he and Julien went their separate ways and the storyline wasn’t dragged out with them still trying to make it work between them. But the plotline could’ve been even twistier if that baby Ashley’s carrying was Davis’.
Did Aki’s hair color change, like, three times during this episode? On the plus side, his role in this edition was pretty small, so that was a nice change of pace. I really liked Max in this installment and the dynamic between Zoya and Monet too. But the Obie storyline is snooze-worthy, and there isn’t enough for Luna to do.
I’m just struggling to find anything to care about. I want to be more than curious to see what happens each week for the sake of it. I want to be genuinely interested. But I’m just… not.
And even as creator Joshua Safran clamors for more eyeballs, it’s frustrating that he’s committed to playing up the show’s weakest part, despite criticism from longtime “Gossip Girl” fans. There are apparently more character returns to look forward to, but are we just waiting for another letdown? As always, time will tell.
