Teen Drama Links for April 19, 2022
I’m often late to various bandwagons.
I didn’t watch the premiere of “Lost” until the night of its series finale. More recently, I was a few years late to “Euphoria” and months late to “Cruel Summer.” Now, roughly three months after its season finale, I’ve finally jumped on the “Yellowjackets” train.
“Yellowjackets” is set in two time periods, and I’d argue the portions that follow a group of teens in the wake of a plane crash qualify as a teen drama in the mystery / thriller sub-genre. Plenty of teen drama tropes are present, like love triangles and frenemies, so it’s no surprise I was sucked in. But I also love dystopian and post-apocalyptic settings, and the group’s time stranded in the wilderness evokes a lot of those characteristics as well.
There are also some bona fide teen drama connections. One of the main characters is named Jackie Taylor, the same name as Kelly’s mom on “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Another minor character has the last name “Walsh,” the surname famously used on “Beverly Hills, 90210.” And actor Steven Krueger appeared on an episode of “90210.”
I’ve spent some time catching up on interviews with the show’s cast and crew, and I look forward to going down some Reddit rabbit holes. And when the second season of “Yellowjackets” eventually airs, I definitely won’t be late to the party.
