Fifteen years ago this weekend, the legacy of “Beverly Hills, 90210” changed forever.
On September 2, 2008, “90210” premiered on The CW.
And with that, the history of “Beverly Hills, 90210” changed for the worse.
I won’t rehash the egregious damage “90210” did to the “Beverly Hills, 90210” world, especially in its first two seasons. I’ve already written about that at length. But it still drives me bonkers today when people misuse the name “90210” and confuse it with “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
And over the last few days, I’ve tried to decide whether “90210” or “BH90210,” which I’ve also written about at length, did more damage to the “Beverly Hills, 90210” legacy. Just when I’ve settled on one show or the other, I remember something else that swings me back in the other direction (and pisses me off all over again). I curse the days both projects hit the air.
I know it’s no fun when — and this is an expression I only recently heard! — someone yucks on your yum. So, if you love “90210,” I’m happy for you! You have every right to love it. We’re just going to have to agree to disagree.
Happy 15th anniversary to all those celebrating this milestone. Me, well, I’ll be in mourning.
Vacation alert: There will be no “Teen Drama Links” next week due to my annual extended Labor Day weekend trip to the O.Henry Hotel. “Teen Drama Links” will return on September 12 with an extra-long edition.
SAG-AFTRA Strike Update
News and notes…
After disappearing for two weeks, “9021OMG” returned yesterday — and they still haven’t acknowledged the strike whatsoever.
“Drama Queens” went back to its “23 Questions” format to interview Antwon Tanner (Skills, One Tree Hill) without violating the strike.
They started the conversation with some discussion of the strike and the issues at hand, and it came up a few other times over the course of the chat. Toward the end, Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill) was careful in her praise of Tanner, referring to a scene they recently watched but avoiding any specifics.
Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea, Beverly Hills, 90210) shared a photo of herself picketing with Dawnn Lewis (Denise, One Tree Hill). (Instagram)
Michael Cudlitz (Tony, Beverly Hills, 90210) and Gina Torres (Gabriela, Gossip Girl) were also photographed on the picket lines, separately, last week. (Deadline)
I missed this interview Busy Philipps (Audrey, Dawson’s Creek) did about the strike a few weeks ago. (Vogue)
I also missed this post she made about hitting the picket lines. (Instagram)
See another interview in which Philipps discusses the strike in “Best of the Rest” below.
Nicole Bilderback (Heather, Dawson’s Creek) revealed the minimal foreign residuals she gets for “Dawson’s Creek” and other projects. (Instagram)
Because of the strike, I was surprised to see this new interview Bilderback did for the 23rd anniversary of Bring It On. I’m not sure if the fact that the film was produced under the Theatrical Independent Agreement means such promotion is allowed — a la Ian Ziering (Steve, Beverly Hills, 90210) promoting Sharknado earlier this month (which I’m still confused on).
Bilderback has shown extensive support for the strike on social media (and in this article last month), but is also still extensively promoting Bring It On. Hm.
Ben McKenzie (Ryan, The O.C.) and wife Morena Baccarin (Maya, The O.C.) also joined the protests. (Us Weekly / Instagram)
I’ll be curious to see if McKenzie or anyone else from “The O.C.” participates in this “O.C.”-themed picket day tomorrow. (Twitter)
