Teen Drama Links for August 30, 2022
“Beverly Hills, 90210” can’t get no respect.
Look at the show’s ranking on the below lists, and how some other series fared.
TV Guide’s 90 Best Shows of the 90s (July 2022)
#38: “Beverly Hills, 90210”
#29: “Dawson’s Creek”
#19: “Melrose Place”
NME’s The 50 Greatest Teen Shows of All Time (August 2022)
Not ranked: “Beverly Hills, 90210”
#27: “Gossip Girl”
#8: “Dawson’s Creek”
#3: “The O.C.”
Indiewire’s The 35 Best Teen Shows (August 2022)
#23: “Gossip Girl” (both iterations)
#16: “Beverly Hills, 90210”
#15: “Dawson’s Creek”
#2: “The O.C.”
Now, I’ve already shared all of these lists in recent “Teen Drama Links,” but I’m still so bothered by them — specifically, where “Beverly Hills, 90210” is ranked or not even ranked on each — that I need to vent.
You might say I’m biased because “Beverly Hills, 90210” is my all-time favorite show, but I think we can objectively say the show that really started the teen drama genre, was a worldwide cultural phenomenon, and lasted for 10 seasons deserved to rank a helluva lot higher on TV Guide’s list, higher on Indiewire’s, and just on NME’s list, period.
I don’t know how you make a list about 1990s television, as TV Guide did, and place the show that aired the entire decade at no. 38. Its spinoff has a significantly better ranking and, sure, sometimes spinoffs can be better or just as good as the original show, but we’re talking about Melrose freaking Place here, not “Better Call Saul.”
This isn’t meant to be a knock on the rankings “Dawson’s Creek” and “The O.C.” received. Hell, “One Tree Hill” isn’t ranked at all on the NME and Indiewire lists (and neither is “90210,” but okay). But none of these shows would exist without “Beverly Hills, 90210.” If you want to argue that doesn’t make “Beverly Hills, 90210” better quality than them… fine. But let’s think about this a little more.
Critics have always deemed “The O.C.” to be the best of the bunch and given the show credit for elevating the genre (praise also given to “Dawson’s Creek,” something I’ve written about), and I have often found that to be short-sighted and the result of people not truly watching enough of “Beverly Hills, 90210” to thoroughly understand what it accomplished and how. Maybe “The O.C.” did some things better than “Beverly Hills, 90210,” but you have to give “Beverly Hills, 90210” props for doing them first and literally defining the genre. You want to rank “The O.C.” higher (or is it lower?) than “Beverly Hills, 90210”? Fine. But “Beverly Hills, 90210” shouldn’t rank so poorly.
At least Entertainment Weekly understood the assignment when they compiled their list of the “The 50 Best Teen Shows of All Time” last year. “Beverly Hills, 90210” clocked in at a respectable No. 4, while “The O.C.” ranked No. 3, “Dawson’s Creek” was 10th, “Gossip Girl” was 19th, and “One Tree Hill” was 34th. (Still no love for nu90210.)
I’m not saying “Beverly Hills, 90210” needs to be No. 1 on these lists. But in the top 10? Without a doubt.
Vacation alert: “Teen Drama Links” will return on September 13.

Here’s an update on the future of The CW: “On the original scripted programming side, in addition to the CW’s signature genre shows and teen soaps, which the network intends to keep doing — just not as many — it plans to broaden its slate by adding procedurals and other older-skewing dramas as well as half-hour comedies including multi-camera sitcoms.” (Deadline)
Casting is underway for “Alert,” which is being written and executive-produced by John Eisendrath (executive producer, Beverly Hills, 90210), who is also the showrunner.

Perhaps this is why Spelling disappeared from “9021OMG” and social media back in May?
Jennie Garth (Kelly, Beverly Hills, 90210) is doing press again for her Voltaren partnership.
Speaking of medical partnerships, I keep meaning to share this: Tiffani Thiessen (Valerie, Beverly Hills, 90210) has been doing a bunch of videos for the National Meningitis Association. (It’s About Time: Help Stop the Clock)

Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill), Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill), and Bethany Joy Lenz (Haley, One Tree Hill) are taking their “Drama Queens” podcast on tour for a series of live shows. (Drama Queens)
This seems reminiscent of what Garth and Spelling did a while back with “Jennie Garth & Tori Spelling Live: A Night to Remember,” though that was pre-podcast and didn’t have much success. I’m guessing “Drama Queens” will have a much better turnout; at least one of the dates is already sold out.

“Gossip Girl” worlds colliding: Doherty says Brittany Snow, who played young Lily on the original “Gossip Girl,” was among his first celebrity crushes.
More worlds colliding: This was written by Tyler McCall, a self-professed “‘Gossip Girl’ historian” who has been on the “XOXO” podcast a handful of times, including just last week.
