One of the signature features of TeenDramaWhore.com was “News Roundup,” an almost-daily post in which I rounded up all the news related to “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “The O.C.,” “One Tree Hill,” “Gossip Girl,” and “90210.” Fans needn’t go to a dozen different sites to be in the know, as I conveniently provided all of the news in one place. And I do mean all.
Here on the new TDW, I won’t be compiling every little thing. There is less news these days — after all, none of the shows have new episodes anymore, though my Google Alerts still go off seemingly 24/7 — and there is less worthy news. So while I’ll still be aggregating links, I’ll be putting more effort into curating them. And while these roundups will still be a TDW staple, they won’t come out on a set schedule. I will be taking my time to compile each roundup so it’s filled with quality links. Be sure to subscribe, if you haven’t already, to ensure you never miss an edition.
Teen Drama Links for October 12, 2020
As October 4 marked 30 years since the premiere of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” a number of media outlets reflected on the show, as did the stars themselves.
Much of the cast celebrated on social media, as well as during the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show Podcast,” which aired a three-and-a-half-hour “super show.” I will have more info on the podcast later this week. (Entertainment Tonight)
The podcast also released a special episode on October 11 in honor of the late Luke Perry (Dylan, Beverly Hills, 90210) and his birthday. Brian Austin Green (David, Beverly Hills, 90210) and Madelaine Petsch of “Riverdale” took part, along with Larry Mollin (executive producer, Beverly Hills, 90210), David Arquette (Diesel, Beverly Hills, 90210), and others.
Several cast members also posted birthday tributes for Luke on social media. (PEOPLE)
“Today” compiled past interviews from some of the cast focusing on their favorite memories. (Today Show)
Ian Ziering (Steve, Beverly Hills 90210) and Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea, Beverly Hills, 90210) discussed both the original show and “BH90210” with “Good Morning America.” (GMA)
The core eight cast members are featured in “‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Stars, Then & Now,” though this oddly wasn’t actually published for the anniversary but rather in relation to Jessica Alba’s recent controversial comments (see below). (E! Online)
This article asks: “Would ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Still Be Relevant To Teens Today?” I maintain yes — and so does the author. (Moms)
Jennie Garth (Kelly, Beverly Hills, 90210) and Tori Spelling (Donna, Beverly Hills, 90210) used the anniversary to officially announce their new podcast, “9021OMG,” which will debut on November 9. (PEOPLE)
Darren Star (creator, Beverly Hills, 90210) reflects on the series in a new profile, saying of the show’s success, “There wasn’t really time to enjoy it.” (Los Angeles Times)
In the piece, Star shares an anecdote about Madchen Amick and Gerald McRaney, who appeared on “Dawson’s Creek” and “One Tree Hill,” respectively.
The profile was timed to the premiere of Star’s new Netflix series, “Emily in Paris,” which some have described as “Gossip Girl” meets “Sex in the City.”
Star even included a “Gossip Girl” joke in one of the episodes. (Entertainment Tonight)
And this list of “12 TV Shows to Watch If You Can't Get Enough of “Emily in Paris” includes “Gossip Girl.”
In another interview, Star reflected, “I think if you look at ‘Beverly Hills 90210,’ Beverly Hills is a fantasy, but the experiences of those characters were real. That’s why the show lasted for 300 episodes. Because people cared about the characters.” (Vulture)
Ziering interestingly says he would title the current chapter of his life “To Be Continued…” (Digital Journal)
The above interview was to promote the premiere of “Swamp Thing” on The CW. “Swamp Thing” filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, last year — where “Dawson’s Creek” and “One Tree Hill” both filmed and where I currently live.
Shannen Doherty is profiled in the October issue of Elle. (Elle)
Of “BH90210” she says, “I’m very grateful I did it. It was nice seeing everyone again from a new perspective.”
Shannen’s husband, Kurt Iswarienko, photographed her for the magazine spread.
Green is now the second “Beverly Hills, 90210” cast member to compete on “The Masked Singer,” following Spelling. (Variety)
Of “BH90210” he said in a post-elimination interview, “I was always under the impression from the beginning with Fox that it was going to be a summer event, that it was going to be this six episode miniseries. So I wasn’t really expecting to come back and do more than that. I know some people were and some people were hoping that they would, but I really feel like we told the story that we had the intention of telling.”
Jessica Alba, who appeared in two season 8 episodes of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” claims she wasn’t allowed to “make eye contact with any of the cast members.” (PEOPLE)
Alba’s comments led to this compilation: “10 Famous Stars You Forgot Were on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ — And What They’ve Said About Their Experience.” (Us Weekly)
Garth and Spelling responded to Alba’s comments in a preview clip for their new podcast. (90210MG)
Jason Priestley (Brandon, Beverly Hills 90210) also reacted in a radio interview, though he inaccurately said Alba was “in a storyline that I had nothing to do with.” In actuality, Brandon was involved in the storyline through Kelly (Episodes 8.23, “Making Amends,” and 8.24, “The Nature of Nuture”). (E! Online)
Ziering shared his reaction as well while making the media rounds for “Swamp Thing.” (Access Hollywood)
And Green spoke about the issue during interviews following his “Masked Singer” elimination. (PEOPLE)
This list of “Iconic Teen Show Villains” includes characters from “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “The O.C.,” “One Tree Hill,” and “Gossip Girl,” as well as a character from “Freaks and Geeks” played by Busy Philipps (Audrey, Dawson’s Creek). (Wonderwall)
James Van Der Beek (Dawson, Dawson’s Creek) appeared on the October 2 episode of “Match Game.” He was also on an episode that aired back in June. (ABC)
Van Der Beek and his family are moving to Texas. From where, you ask? None other than Beverly Hills. (PEOPLE)
Jensen Ackles (CJ, Dawson’s Creek) and wife Danneel Harris (Rachel, One Tree Hill) have started a production company. (Deadline)
Greg Berlanti (executive producer, Dawson’s Creek) and Autumn Reeser (Taylor, The O.C.) are participating in what looks like a charity event that’s right up our alley: a script read of “Crisis on Infinite Teen Dramas.” (The Bitter Script Reader)
According to the description, “A Crisis is erasing the world of the Teen Drama multiverse and the only thing that can save it is an all-star cast of teen archetypes assembled by Kevin Arnold and Dawson Leery! The worlds of VERONICA MARS, EVERWOOD, RIVERDALE, ONE TREE HILL, GILMORE GIRLS and 13 REASONS WHY are just a few that collide in this meeting of the angstiest, sexiest and fastest talking teens in TV history.”
The script is further described as “a tribute to the classic WB teen dramas of yesterday and an affectionate parody of the CW superhero shows of today.”
And Reeser will actually be portraying Taylor!

“The O.C.” is included in this list of “The 50 best TV shows to watch on HBO Max right now.” The article even calls it “the best teen drama of the 2000s.” (USA Today)

Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) suggested an “OTH reboot” would be possible if Harper Peterson is reelected to the North Carolina State Senate. (Twitter)

“Lucas’ bridge” from “One Tree Hill” is being repaired, contrary to rumors it was being torn down. (WWAY)
Sadly, though, all of the fan messages written on the bridge are being removed. “The signatures and all of that will be gone, but this is needed in order to protect and preserve the bridge’s truss,” said a city spokesperson. (StarNews)
Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz, One Tree Hill) is included in “19 Fictional TV And Movie Singers That Deserve Record Deals More Than Some Real Artists,” with the author acknowledging Joy has released her own music. (Buzzfeed)

“Gossip Girl” is the only one of the core six teen dramas on this list of “Not Safe For School: The Sexiest Teen Movies and Shows on Streaming.” The link isn’t quite safe for work either. (Decider)
“Gossip Girl” is also the only one on this list of “The Best Teen Dramas and Comedies to Watch on Netflix Right Now.” (TV Guide)
And Dan from “Gossip Girl” is the only one here: “28 TV Characters Who Started Off As Fan Favourites, But Ended Up Being The Absolute Worst.” (Buzzfeed)
The CW’s head of casting, who oversaw the casting of “Gossip Girl” and “90210,” is retiring. (Deadline)
I would love your thoughts on this: "Dear Teen TV Shows: Can We Please Stop Glorifying Toxic Men?" (Washington Square News)
It's crazy how much news there is still about those TV shows! I didn't read them all, but I like the article in MOMs about Beverly Hills, 90210. It's funny because I never thought about Andrea's pregnancy as a "teen pregnancy" - but she was indeed 18 or 19 when this storyline occurred. Also, I personally never thought that the actor playing Skills on OTH looked older than the others or out of place - so I'd argue the actor actually did a good job portraying a high schooler!
