“Reboot” is the show “BH90210” wanted to be.
The Hulu comedy is centered around the cast and crew of an old sitcom who come back together to revive their show but with a new edge to it. The series, which is rated TV-MA, depicts the showrunners and writers developing new plots, the cast members trying to rejuvenate their careers and get used to spending time together again, and the network, media, and others meddling in it all.
It’s a great premise for “Reboot.” The concept just made no sense for “Beverly Hills, 90210.” The idea wasn’t original, and “Beverly Hills, 90210” — even a new iteration — wasn’t meant to be a comedy or a satire or, you know, poorly written and acted like “BH90210” was. You can watch “Reboot” and understand what “BH90210” was trying to do. You can also read this and understand why it didn’t work.
Anyway, as for “Reboot” itself, which I binged last week, it took until the third episode for me to really warm up to the series. I adored Paul Reiser (I binged “Mad About You” a few years ago and fell in love with him), and I liked Rachel Bloom (I love that her character went to my alma mater, Northwestern). I don’t think I knew Peter Gallagher (Sandy, The O.C.) had a small role until he appeared, so that was a nice surprise. I was also surprised by the heart running through some of the stories. It was also a clever touch to have each episode title be the title of a real series (e.g., “Bewitched,” “New Girl,” etc.).
This is one “Reboot” I’ll gladly take more episodes of. More “Beverly Hills, 90210”? No, thank you.
File this under “I’m late to the party, example number 27947271857361.” I’ve finally watched “Succession,” and I actually have my trip to Punta Cana to thank for getting me started. On the way there, after watching His Girl Friday on the plane, I only had a little over an hour left in the flight, so I didn’t want to start another movie. The first few episodes of “Succession” were available, so I watched the pilot. It intrigued me enough to watch the second episode on my flight back (after first watching Steel Magnolias).
Then I spent the next month or so watching “Succession” whenever I could to get through the three seasons, finishing in late December. Roman, Gerri, and Tom are my favorite characters, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing where things go with them in season 4. Such a shame I now have to wait for new episodes like everyone else!
Over the last few weeks, I also binged “The Bear” and “Fleishman is in Trouble,” the latter featuring Adam Brody (Seth, The O.C.) enjoyably playing a character named... Seth. In other words, December was a great time for me to get through some of the series on my never-ending “watch” list.
In the next few months, the new seasons of “The Bachelor,” “A Million Little Things,” “Next Level Chef,” “Survivor,” and “Yellowjackets” will be taking up my viewing hours. And, of course, the rest of the “Gossip Girl” spinoff’s second season… for better or worse.

This is odd: When asked about rebooting “7th Heaven,” actress Catherine Hicks said, “In television, it’s all the writer-producer. The creator is the — remember ‘The O.C.’? Josh Schwartz left and it died. Our lady, Brenda Hampton, stayed for 11 years. So it lived. You would have to have another Brenda Hampton or have her do ‘7th Heaven.’” (TMZ)
But… Schwartz (creator, The O.C. / creator, Gossip Girl / executive producer, Gossip Girl spinoff) never left “The O.C.” He was the showrunner from start to finish. What a random and wrong thing to say.
