The next best thing to watching the teen dramas?
Watching fan-made videos about the teen dramas!
I’m talking about fan-created montages of scenes and dialogue set to poignant songs that get you back in your feels about this couple or that one. I’ve always been amazed at how fans put these videos together. I wouldn’t even know where to start. Just watching one usually sends me down a rabbit hole, never mind making the thing myself.
On the original TeenDramaWhore, I even used to showcase a “YouTube Video of the Week,” though now a handful of them are, sadly, no longer available.
Today I wanted to share two of my all-time favorite teen drama fan videos — and a plea. The first video is about the entirety of Kelly and Dylan’s relationship on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and the second is about most of Peyton and Lucas’s relationship on “One Tree Hill.” Both video creators are extremely talented and I encourage you to check out their YouTube pages for more offerings.
Now the plea — or pleas, plural, I should say. There are three videos I am just desperate for someone to make. I’ve tweeted about these requests before, but maybe expanding on my thinking will inspire someone to do what I can’t… you know, actually make the videos.
A Kelly-Dylan video set to Taylor Swift’s “August”: This is the perfect song for Kelly and Dylan’s season 3 summer romance from Kelly’s perspective. As the summer ends, it represents her longing for what she can’t really have. The song reflects back on “thinkin’ I had you” and “livin’ for the hope of it all” as she returns to reality and the fact that they have to go their separate ways.
"Back when we were still changin' for the better Wanting was enough For me, it was enough To live for the hope of it all Cancel plans just in case you'd call And say, 'Meet me behind the mall' So much for summer love and saying 'us' 'Cause you weren't mine to lose You weren't mine to lose, no"
A Joey-Pacey video set to Taylor Swift’s “Happiness”: When Joey and Pacey implode toward the end of season 4 and then try to figure out if they can still make the relationship work, it’s incredibly bittersweet. This song gives Joey’s perspective on the breakup — how upset she is, how she can’t forget the good they did for one another, and how she has to go through life on her own now. One such video is already on YouTube, but covers way more than this specific time period, so it’s not quite what I’m looking for.
"I can't make it go away by making you a villain I guess it's the price I paid for seven years in heaven And I pulled your body into mine Every goddamn night, now I get fake niceties No one teaches you what to do When a good man hurts you And you know you hurt him too"
A Marianne-Connell video set to Taylor Swift’s “Illicit Affairs”: I’ve already written about why watching “Normal People” is a must for teen drama fans, and I recently completed my annual rewatch. To be fair, there are at least three videos on YouTube currently that blend “Normal People” and “Illicit Affairs,” but none of them have done it for me, you know? I’m looking for a video that covers only the show’s first three episodes (senior year of high school) and how Marianne feels about having to hide their relationship.
"And you wanna scream Don't call me 'kid' Don't call me 'baby' Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me You showed me colors You know I can't see with anyone else Don't call me 'kid' Don't call me 'baby' Look at this idiotic fool that you made me You taught me a secret language I can't speak with anyone else And you know damn well For you, I would ruin myself A million little times"
So the obvious, albeit unintentional, theme here is Taylor Swift. I’ve listened to these songs, from the Folklore and Evermore albums, countless times and in each instance, my mind goes to these three couples and how the lyrics so fittingly describe moments in their relationships. The lines I’ve highlighted above are just especially apropos and my favorite parts, but really the full songs are applicable in so many ways.
I really encourage you to listen to each song with the teen drama storyline I referenced in mind. After all, until someone makes these mashup videos, that’s all we can do.
For further viewing if you’re a Delly (Kylan) or Poey (Jacey) fan, I highly recommend these two video series: “Dylan and Kelly Top 50 Moments” and “My Top 50 Pacey and Joey Moments.”

A little rant: I’m pretty disappointed with the outcome of TV Guide’s “90 Best Shows of the ‘90s” countdown. Somehow, “Beverly Hills, 90210” only ranked 38th while “Dawson’s Creek” only placed 29th. Yet “Melrose Place” made it to 19th?! (TV Insider)
