I can’t stop thinking about Luke Perry.
Sunday marked four years since his death — a passage of time I can’t fathom.
I still can’t fathom his death, period.
Days before this heartbreaking milestone, I had dinner with my friend Dr. Vallie Lynn Watson. The timing was noteworthy because the last time we were able to get together happened to be on Perry’s birthday in October. He keeps bringing us together.
During our wide-ranging conversation, I confessed that sometimes I don’t remember that Perry is even gone. It’s not that I forget. It’s that, as I shared back in 2020, I feel he’s still here. He’s still around, existing, living his life as he always was. I just haven’t heard an interview with him lately, seen him in the news, or watched a new project. But of course he’s still around.
Then something will happen that reminds me — no, Perry has died. And I’m awash in grief all over again.
Then I think about how my grief is nothing compared to that of Perry’s loved ones. As much as it sometimes feels otherwise, I didn’t know-him know him. Though he’s shown up in my dreams for, quite literally, decades, I never met him. Never spoke to him. I fell in love with him through a television screen.
My sadness is real. My adoration is real. But while Dylan McKay may have belonged to the fans, Perry never did. He will always belong to his friends and family, whose pain I can’t imagine.
Still, it is on us to ensure his legacy endures.
Perry may have left the living but he hasn’t left us. He is still alive to us. Through us. Forever.
