This is me… getting emotionally ready for tonight’s series finale of “This Is Us.”
To be honest, I wasn’t crazy about the show when it first premiered. I felt iffy through the first few episodes, in fact. But I stuck with it and fell in love with its potent mix of pathos and humor… not to mention the twists, writing, and acting. I’ve watched many episodes in awe, especially these last few. And tonight, this is… ending.
The show’s casting across its six seasons was just incredible, especially among the younger versus older actors (even if I didn’t always believe that the characters in the present adequately matched the past… like Kevin and Randall were never funny like that growing up). My favorite character was pretty much always Beth (which is weird for me since I have a relative named Beth whom I hate… and yes, I have no problem sharing that publicly). The way Susan Kelechi Watson could deliver a line… she cracked me up so much. In the penultimate episode, she broke me with her goodbye to Rebecca while also giving such a classic, hilarious delivery when talking with Randall about knowing Deja was pregnant.
I’m really glad creator Dan Fogelman stuck to his guns and didn’t renege on plans to end the show after six seasons. The series didn’t overstay its welcome and was able to be carefully plotted because a very specific endgame was in sight. In Entertainment Weekly’s new digital cover story about the show, Milo Ventimiglia says of movie / spinoff / reboot talk, “It’s perfect. Leave it alone.” You guys know how I feel about spinoffs, so I tend to agree, but I think Fogelman could create something just as beautiful with the family introduced in the second-to-last episode, though he has no plans to do as at this time.
Speaking of EW, no one has covered “This Is Us” better over the years than that publication and the author of its new cover story, Dan Snierson (a fellow Northwestern alum). I’ve ordered the magazine’s “The Ultimate Guide to This Is Us” special edition, which Snierson no doubt had a huge hand in, and am eagerly anticipating its arrival.
Am I eagerly anticipating tonight? Yes and no. I’m eager to see how this six-year journey (at least for us viewers; it was decades for the characters) ends. But I know I will miss having the show in my life. Thank goodness for the memories… and YouTube.
