Teen Drama Links for October 26, 2021
What happened on the set of Rust last week is a tragedy — one with connections to our teen drama world.
Last Thursday, a prop gun discharged by Alec Baldwin on the film’s New Mexican set fatally struck director of photography Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. The investigation into how this heart-wrenching accident happened, and whether any charges will be filed, is ongoing. Understandably, production — which was already reportedly plagued with problems — is now on hold indefinitely.
I had just mentioned Rust in last week’s “Teen Drama Links,” sharing that Jensen Ackles (CJ, Dawson’s Creek) would co-star in the Western. Ackles posted about the project on Instagram the same day, calling it a “dream come true.” On Sunday night, he broke his silence on the fatal accident, admitting on Instagram, “I’m not even sure where to start. This has been a tragedy of epic proportions that we are all still processing.”
After offering praise for Hawkins and expressing condolences to her family, Ackles said he and wife Danneel Harris (Rachel, One Tree Hill), “donated to the AFI scholarship fund in her name and to the go fund me.” He then shared the links for those who “feel compelled” to donate as well.
Meanwhile, Bethany Joy Lenz (Haley, One Tree Hill), who worked with Hutchins on the film Blindfire, posted a moving tribute on Instagram, writing in part, “We lost a bright light. @halynahutchins was such a talented artist and a kind, wild, creative spirit. She made me feel appreciated and safe as an artist.”
Joe Manganiello (Owen, One Tree Hill) also shared on Instagram a tribute to Hutchins, the DP on Archenemy, in which Manganiello starred and produced. He wrote in part, “This is a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to her family and especially to her son. I am so sad today for everyone who knew her and worked with her.”
In another teen drama connection, Baldwin, of course, is brother to William “Billy” Baldwin, who played William van der Woodsen on the original “Gossip Girl.” And this terrible, terrible story has brought Wilmington, North Carolina — where “Dawson’s Creek” and “One Tree Hill” were filmed and where I live — into the news as outlets recall the fatal shooting of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow here in 1993.
My heart goes out to everyone affected.
