This past Saturday, September 23, was the 20th anniversary of “One Tree Hill.”
Unlike with the 20th anniversary of “The O.C.” last month, I find this milestone extremely bittersweet.
From the fall of 2003 to the spring of 2012 and beyond, we were in love with a TV show about teens, later young adults, growing up in a small town. Then, in 2017, everything we thought we knew about the show was upended.
As I’ve already written about extensively, it is nearly impossible to separate “One Tree Hill” and its genius from what we now know was happening behind the scenes at the hands of its creator, Mark Schwahn.
There’s much to be happy about with this anniversary, but also much to be sad about.
A lot of the show’s cast originally intended to celebrate the anniversary with a fan event in Wilmington, where the series was filmed (and I live), this past weekend, but the festivities were postponed until November due the actors strike. I’m not convinced the rescheduled dates will hold, either, based on how things are going thus far.
The strike also limited the ways in which the cast could celebrate the anniversary on social media. (Some cast members did post tributes, however, and there was media coverage timed to the anniversary. See “Listicle Links” below.)
But there is a lot to celebrate. Schwahn created some damn good television. I give him a lot of credit for that.
He was also a sexual predator, among other things. I hold all of that against him.
He was extremely talented. He was also a monster. Both of these things can be true.
And that’s why milestones like this, why every “One Tree Hill Day” on every September 23, are forever bittersweet.
SAG-AFTRA Strike Update
News and notes…
Although the writers guild and the AMPTP have reached a tentative deal to end the writers strike, it still needs to be ratified by the members of the WGA for their work stoppage to officially end. In any case, the actors strike continues and will continue do so until SAG-AFTRA reaches its own deal with the studios and achieves ratification.
Brian Austin Green (David, Beverly Hills, 90210) didn’t follow the strike rules in this interview for “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test” — though I think this is actually part of the same problematic interview that I previously flagged. (Channel Guide Magazine)
And yet Green talks about the strike in this.

Michael Trucco (Josh, Beverly Hills, 90210 / Cooper, One Tree Hill) joined a “Battlestar Galactica”-themed picketing day. (Instagram)
Trucco did an interview about the strike issues while protesting. (Give Me My Remote)
Busy Philipps (Audrey, Dawson’s Creek) posted several Instagram Stories from her time picketing last week, as well as several celebrating the WGA deal.
David Downs (Mr. Kasdan, Dawson’s Creek) shared a photo of himself on the picket line. (Facebook)
Maggie Friedman (producer, Dawson’s Creek) also posted photos of herself on the picket line. (Instagram)

“Beverly Hills, 90210” is once again leaving Hulu, effective October 1. (Vulture)
Green somewhat clarified recent inflammatory comments he made about co-parenting with Vanessa Marcil (Gina, Beverly Hills, 90210) on his “Old-ish” podcast. (Us Weekly)
I haven’t actually listened to that (or any) edition of “Old-ish” and have only read the quotes from various media outlets, so I apologize if I’m getting something wrong. But on top of it being disheartening that Green again publicly discussed his private issues with Marcil, why on earth did Sharna Burgess make allegations about what supposedly happened between the exes after they broke up? Burgess didn’t even know Green then! So is it really your place to comment and make claims? Furthermore, how do you square doing that with Marcil but saying of Green and Megan Fox, “How it went down, what went down, it’s zero of my business.” Why doesn't that apply with Marcil too?
Green and Burgess revealed on their podcast that they’ve been in engaged since July. (iHeart)
