When I first heard “Beverly Hills, 90210” producers Charles (Chuck) Rosin and Larry Mollin were teaming up for a podcast, I was surprised and intrigued.
I first interviewed Chuck for TeenDramaWhore.com in 2009 and again in 2010. I interviewed Larry that same year. Though all of these chats were fairly extensive (and actually unprecedented), I knew in some ways, we barely scratched the surface.
But did I ever imagine they’d agree to reunite onscreen, week after week, to regale us with behind-the-scenes tales? Not in my wildest dreams. But thanks to fellow fan Pete Ferriero, that’s exactly what’s happened with the “Beverly Hills 90210 Show.”
When much of the world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, Pete transported us back to Beverly Hills with weekly (and sometimes twice-weekly) podcast episodes in which Chuck and Larry reflect on classic episodes and storylines, often joined by special guests.
In fact, between April and September, they recorded podcasts (or rather, videocasts) with not just fellow “Beverly Hills, 90210” writer Karen Rosin (also Chuck’s wife!) and fellow producer Jessica Klein, but creator Darren Star, FOX executive Sandy Grushow, co-producer Chip Johannessen, writers Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts, and directors like Michael Lange, David Semel, Bethany Rooney, Dan Attias, James Whitmore Jr., and Bradley Gross. That’s in addition to costume designer Molly Campbell, set designer Drew Kinney, head of casting Tony Shepherd, and composer Fred Mollin (brother of Larry).
In the same time frame, the podcast also featured all of these amazing cast members: Carol Potter (Cindy), Ryan Thomas Brown (Muntz), Michael Cudlitz (Tony), James Eckhouse (Jim), Kerrie Keane (Suzanne), Vicellous Shannon (Juwan), Jason Carter (Roy), Nick Kiriazis (Carl), Alan Toy (Professor Finley), Katherine Cannon (Felice), Sara Melson (Alison), Joshua Beckett (Josh), Bryan Abrams (Color Me Badd), Emma Caulfield (Susan), Carl T. Evans (Jonathan), Cameron Bancroft (Joe), Christine Elise (Emily), Jill Novick (Tracy), Rebecca Gayheart (Toni), and Cliff Weissman (Bruno).
Oh, and did I mention main cast members Brian Austin Green (David), Jason Priestley (Brandon), Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea), Mark Damon Espinoza (Jesse), and Lindsay Price (Janet) all appeared too?!
And, of course, little ol’ me, the ultimate TeenDramaWhore. I made my first appearance on the podcast during a July episode with Brown, Kiriazis, and Lange, discussing with them the season 6 finale. (Lange and I also discussed that episode in our own interview back in 2010.) I then appeared again in a September episode all about the Brenda-Dylan-Kelly love triangle.
But nothing compares to the October 4 “Super Show” marking the 30th anniversary of the series premiere. This special three-and-a-half-hour installment again featured many of the above names AND so many more, like: Jennie Garth (Kelly), Tori Spelling (Donna), Jamie Walters (Ray), Ann Gillespie (Jackie), Matthew Laurance (Mel), Josh Taylor (Jack), Valerie Wildman (Christine), Jennifer Grant (Celeste), Douglas Emerson (Scott), Jenny O'Hara (Pam), Denise Dowse (Mrs. Teasley), Zachary Throne (Howard), Matthew Porretta (Dan), Randy Spelling (Ryan), David Hayward (Kevin), Dana Barron (Nikki), Noley Thornton (Erica), Henk Van Eeghen (editor), Danielle Claman Gelber (assistant to Aaron Spelling), and Betty Reardon (coordinating producer and assistant to Paul Waigner). All that said, the tribute to Luke Perry (Dylan) was by far my favorite part.
Meanwhile, in advance of the broadcast, I pretaped a segment with Pete, Chuck, Larry, and Jessica about (what else?) “Beverly Hills, 90210” setting the blueprint for the teen drama genre. Sadly, it was ultimately cut from the “Super Show” due to time constraints — so Hollywood!
In any case, grab some popcorn (and maybe some tissues) and take a walk down memory lane with the videos below.
October 4: “The Super Show”
September 3: “Dylan, Brenda and Kelly, Oh My!”
July 20: “You Say It’s Your Birthday”
P.S. Be sure to read my TeenDramaWhore.com interviews with Carol Potter (Cindy), James Eckhouse (Jim), Christine Elise (Emily), Michael Cudlitz (Tony), and Randy Spelling (Ryan).
We need you back in the podcast to talk more about Kelly and Dylan and to hear all your opinions!!
I love this podcast! But the random order of the episodes they're covering is driving me nuts haha. I wish they would do it chronologically like most rewatch pods :(
