The podcast episodes that various guest stars come on is so nonsensical.. why not have Christine back for the U4EA episode or the My Desperate Valentine one? Like you wrote, Christine hadn't watched the episode they were covering, so it didn't add anything to the discussion. So weird that none of the many iHeartradio employees working on their podcast thinks about that! It's the same with Scott Peterson (from Gilmore Girls)'s recap podcast, and it's only by iHeartradio!
Super interesting to hear Emily Valentine was supposed to be the OG bridge character for Melrose Place. It makes so much more sense than Jake, who looked like someone they pulled out of a hat at the very last minute before S2 ended.
I thought Christine's answer to the questions about whether the girls were nice to her/if Shando was a bitch has evolved was good. It was honest, without being mean or making the girls or Shando look too bad. No everyone is a warm/overly friendly person, especially when you work crazy hours, and that's totally fine, and there's a huge zone between being BFFs like Tori and Jennie and being mean.
100% agree with Luca and Jennie that TV shows today are wayyyy too intense with the sex/making out scenes. I almost feel like watching a show like Beverly Hills, 90210 (or even a later show like The OC or OTH) is more sexy, because it leaves more to the imagination.
Did Tori really say that her UTI was due to her having sex for the first time? Or did I misunderstood that part?
I was like "whattttt the f?" when Jennie explained what craft services are lmao. I feel like it's a pretty common term, and on top of that, their answer to the fan's questions filled in the gap if you didn't already know what it was.
I wonder how much they get when people stream the show on Hulu on Paramount+? Is it also 0.02$ every time someone streams an episode? I also wonder how much Jennie and Tori are making off this podcast. I assume they got a base amount + a % of ad revenue through the affiliate links? I have genuinely no idea what the market value of that podcast is.
Totally fair that you want to shorten those recaps, especially with 3 podcasts + 1 show every week!
Perhaps the iHeart staff DOES think about that stuff... but Jennie and Tori resist their efforts? I have no idea, of course. Just thinking through possible scenarios that would lead to a low-quality product like this. Perhaps iHeart just cares about quantity right now... churning out podcasts regardless of whether they're actually good. (And to be fair, plenty of fans DO think is good. Sigh.)
I really cannot imagine "Melrose Place" (which, admittedly I never watched; only read about it) being centered around Emily. It could've ultimately been an entirely different show with that one character change.
I thought Christine's answer on the "bitch" question was good too. It was honest, but also really mature and generous. It was essentially cutting Shannen, Jennie, and Tori a break and looking at what may have been going on at that time from their perspective. She didn't have to do that. I imagine it took her a long time to have that mindset switch, but I think it comes with the wisdom aging brings. The way you see things in your 20s is not how you see them in your 50s. (Says the 33-year-old.)
Yes, Tori definitely did imply THAT, which isn't really surprising given other sex-related comments she's made on the podcast. For me, it's too much. For some others, I'm sure it's one reason they love her.
I honestly have no idea about streaming residuals or how podcast salaries work, but it's an intriguing topic and I'd love to know. Compared to the amount of effort, time, and work they're putting into the podcast, I'd venture they're making off quite well with however much they're getting paid.
Thanks for understanding -- and thanks for commenting! Love chatting with you and fellow readers <3
iHeartradio's approach to podcasts really reminds me of Netflix in its early days. I feel like they accept almost anything people pitch, and do not try very hard to do quality control. Whereas Kast media, who so far only have WTTOCB as a recap podcast, reminds me more of Apple TV - more sleek, more selective, and a final product of much higher quality. Even Kast's website looks better than iHeartradio's! I never listened to any of the other Kast podcasts, but I feel like trying a new one just based on how good WTTOCB is.
You should watch Melrose Place! I'm watching it for the first time now. It's really soapy and "looks" old, but it's still good.
Agree that Christine didn't have to do that. She seems like a great person! It also speaks volumes that she remained good friends with both Jason and his wife.
Tori... Haha. Oh well. I feel like the losing virginity part is not TMI for me, but the UTI is.
Yep, agreed that they're probably making a good return on investment as compared to the time/$$ they had to invest in the podcast. I actually don't even think they had to spend any money - since they clearly don't have the DVDs, don't have Hulu Premium and are using iHeart's recording material. And it would likely be tax-deductible if they had bought any of these things.
That's a really interesting comparison and I agree that what Kast Media is producing is a world above. I wonder what Jennie and Tori would think if they saw the WTTOCB podcast. Would they think it's boring? Would they think it's sleek visually? I actually saw some criticism of it on Facebook that kind of shocked me.
I'd love to eventually watch "Melrose Place" and a billion other shows and just don't know when I'm ever going to have the time!
Yes, it is incredibly telling that Jason and Naomi are so close with Christine. That's a really special relationship they all have.
I think it's combining the virginity with the UTI that sends it over the edge for me!
No, I imagine they haven't had to spend a single dime on the podcast. It's just an investment of time and that's roughly two hours a week. Pretty sweet gig.
