Google’s AI is definitely not a TeenDramaWhore.
Three times in recent months I’ve searched something on Google related to the teen dramas only for its “AI Overview” to give laughably wrong information.
Back in February, I featured a quote from “The O.C.” as a my “Teen Drama Quote of the Week.” Wanting to ensure I had the line of dialogue correct, I typed into Google: Kirsten chardonnay The O.C. At the very top of the list of search results, the AI Overview told me:
“Kirsten Chardonnay is a character from the TV show The O.C.. She is portrayed by actress Mischa Barton.”
Um, what?
Then, late last month, when I was doing some research for the April 1 edition of “Teen Drama Links,” I typed into Google: Steve Donna freezer Beverly Hills 90210. This time, the AI Overview told me “The Freezer” was a well-known episode of “Beverly Hills, 90210” and went on to tell me how Steve was Donna’s boyfriend and how her mom didn’t approve of their relationship.
Um, what?
Out of curiosity, I just repeated the search again and this time the AI Overview said:
Um, what?
Then, the other week, as I was working on an upcoming TDW post, I typed into Google: One Tree Hill spring break. Here’s what came up in response:
Where the hell do I even begin with this one?!
As some of us worry about AI taking our jobs someday and others worry about the public becoming too reliant on AI-powered search results that displace reputable sources, experiences like these show how AI can fall short and can’t always be trusted. Sure, these were searches about inconsequential things, but if you can’t trust Google’s AI to get the details of a teen drama right, why should you trust it with anything else?
