You’ll find no April Fools’ Day pranks here.
But since today’s newsletter falls on the pseudo-holiday, I started thinking about teen drama episodes centered around pranks. Two immediately came to mind.
In the “Beverly Hills, 90210” season 9 episode “I’m Married,” Noah cheating at a game of strip poker sparks a prank war between him, Donna, and Steve. The hijinks get more and more ludicrous as the episode goes on. Frankly, the storyline — thankfully limited to just this episode — is a waste of time.
I have more grace for the season 1 “Dawson’s Creek” episode, “The Scare.” In honor of Friday the 13th, Dawson carries out some practical jokes before hosting a seance at his home. Before long, it seems like a real-life horror movie is playing out, only for Jen and Joey to reveal they were pranking Dawson as payback for all his shenanigans.
Given that the plotline ties into Dawson’s love of horror films and is an homage to Scream, which was written by “Dawson’s Creek” creator Kevin Williamson, the episode doesn’t seem so random. (In fact, in a meta moment more than two decades later, 2022’s Scream features footage from the episode.) In contrast, the “Beverly Hills, 90210” story is unjustifiable filler. Guess the joke’s on me, though, because I’ve still willingly watched the episode countless times.
