What does it take to put this newsletter together each week?
Day by day, here’s a breakdown of how I spend my time working on TeenDramaWhore.
WEDNESDAY
Since this newsletter publishes on Tuesdays, I consider Wednesday the start of my week. This is when I begin gathering content for the next issue. Everything under consideration for inclusion goes into a Google Spreadsheet titled “TDW Substack Ideas.” There, I keep track of every single post (approximately 400 to date!), ideas for each week’s mini-essay (this section), and an ever-growing list of that week’s teen drama news. This spreadsheet also stores all the questions for Teen Drama Trivia Night, quotes for “Quote of the Week,” and more relevant information.
THURSDAY
On Thursday, my content collection for the next issue continues. I also post a “TDW Throwback Essay” on Notes.
FRIDAY
This day is for more content collection, posting the “Quote of the Week” on Notes, and sometimes getting a head start on drafting the next newsletter issue.
SATURDAY
Saturday is almost always when I begin the newsletter draft. I usually start by writing this top section or compiling “Listicle Links.” Then it’s on to putting together “Best of the Rest.” All of this takes several hours.
SUNDAY
Since I now have a working draft of the newsletter issue, any additional content I collect on this day goes into the draft instead of the aforementioned spreadsheet. If I have a monthly Monday post that week (as I did this week), I put the finishing touches on the draft, send myself a test version, and proofread, proofread, proofread.
MONDAY
Along with Saturday, this is the busiest day of my week. I usually listen to “9021OMG” on my lunch break (or “Drama Queens,” if “9021OMG” isn’t released), distribute the monthly Monday post on social media if there is one, and share my podcast reactions on Twitter after work. Then I add any last-minute additions to the newsletter draft and scour the last week’s social media posts of various teen drama stars to see if anything is worthy of inclusion. Then it’s time to send myself a test email of the newsletter and conduct multiple proofreads. I also double-check every single link to ensure it works and goes to the intended destination. I finish by making sure the newsletter is correctly scheduled for publication. Again, this takes several hours.
TUESDAY
The newsletter publishes at 9 a.m. ET. I share it on social media (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, Notes, Threads) during my lunch break, usually after listening to “Drama Queens.” After work, I post my podcast reactions on Twitter and see what teen drama news came out after publication and thus needs to be saved for the next issue.
Then the week begins again on Wednesday and everything repeats! Of course, some weeks also have a little extra work — whether that’s writing the monthly Monday post, building the next Teen Drama Trivia game, or game-planning future issues and brainstorming concepts.
Did I mention this is a hobby? TeenDramaWhore is completely free for subscribers and I make zero dollars from it (really negative dollars when you consider what I pay for certain things, like trivia prizes and keeping the original TDW live). But if you appreciate each issue and all the effort I put in, you can use Buy Me a Coffee to show your support.
If you’re not comfortable demonstrating your love of TeenDramaWhore with your dollars (and I totally get it if that’s the case), there’s others ways to engage. Drop a comment on the weekly post, spread the word, or tell me what you’d like to see. No matter what, I’m grateful for your readership.
