There is no overstating the brilliance of “My Brilliant Friend.”
I read the book series — My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, and The Story of the Lost Child, collectively known as the Neapolitan Novels — almost 10 years ago and I recently finally watched the four-season HBO adaptation.
The show (and the book series) is a coming-of-age story spanning the protagonists’ lives from roughly first grade to their 60s. Seasons 1 and 2 are very much a teen drama as adulthood increasingly creeps in and some characters are forced to grow up faster than others.
The two female protagonists, Elena and Lila, are quite poor but have a Blair-Serena quality to their dynamic. They’re in constant competition with one another but also fiercely loyal to each other, going through life as the best of frenemies. There are love triangles, betrayals, deaths. At times it can feel as if nothing is happening, especially in the earliest episodes, but really, everything is happening. Life is happening.
As I watched, I was amazed at how they aged the characters across the first three seasons with just hair and wardrobe changes, feats I also marveled at in “One Tree Hill,” “Normal People,” and Challengers. That said, there are significant casting changes in the fourth season that I found jarring overall, but the opening credits for that season magnificently depict the change.
It might seem strange to recommend watching the season 4 “Previously on” segment (not to be confused with the season 4 trailer) when you haven’t seen the prior seasons, but after seeing that, I can’t imagine how you wouldn’t want to go back to the beginning of the series to watch how everything unfolded and got to that point. It’s a great encapsulation of the show’s soap opera-like trajectory.
If you need further convincing, consider that Entertainment Weekly named “My Brilliant Friend” “the year’s best teen drama” in 2018 and The New York Times recently named the first novel in the quartet the “best book of the 21st century.” All the critical acclaim is richly deserved, and you’ll be rewarded, too, if you give the show and books a chance.
