A while back, my friend and “Dawson’s Creek” superfan Lisa told me a fun fact told to her by her husband: The band From Autumn to Ashes references “Dawson’s Creek” — and even features the show’s dialogue — in several songs.
I finally sat down to listen and, boy, it really is something.
From Autumn to Ashes is what I would call a screamo or metalcore band and there is a lot of screaming going on here. Really, it’s hard to even make out a lot of the words.
But there’s no mistaking that the track “Take Her to the Music Store” opens with a snippet of Joey infamously telling Pacey, “You break my heart into a thousand pieces and you say it’s because I deserve better?” And the lyrics do seem to represent Joey’s feelings in the immediate aftermath of their “Promicide” blow-up.
Then there’s “Reflections,” which, at nearly seven minutes in, features some of Pacey’s dialogue from their horrific prom fight. Meanwhile, “Capeside Rock,” besides having the obvious title reference, contains the lyrics, “Across the creek / and into your home.”
All of the songs are from the band’s Too Bad You’re Beautiful album, which came out in summer 2001, when “Dawson’s Creek” was about to embark on its fifth season. I can’t say I recommend it as a good listen — and I say that as someone whose AIM screenname was “punkmetalemogrl” and who, like the band, is from Long Island — but it is pretty neat that they obviously enjoyed the show (and confirmed as much in interviews).
And, sure, From Autumn to Ashes isn’t the only music act to ever reference our beloved teen drama, but this certainly took me by surprise. I’m betting it will you, too.
