Teen Drama Links for January 25, 2022
Well, it was bound to happen, folks. We have ourselves another teen drama podcast.
Last week, Jessica Szohr announced she’ll be hosting “XOXO,” which will offer “the ultimate deep dive into the cultural phenomenon known as ‘Gossip Girl.’” The official description further states:
“Featuring interviews with the cast and crew, as well as moguls in music, fashion, and entertainment, Jessica will bring to life behind-the-scenes stories, on-set memories, New York City, fan favorite episodes, and more. Most of all, the podcast will be a walk down memory lane for the cast, crew, and fans alike, showing just how Gossip Girl changed their lives and influenced the culture of today — in addition to millions of fans across the world.”
While nostalgic TV podcasts are all the rage right now and Szohr certainly seems to be hopping on the bandwagon, it appears this one will be slightly different as it doesn’t sound like it will be a straight episode-by-episode rewatch podcast. But it is being produced by iHeart Podcasts, the same company responsible for “9021OMG” and “Drama Queens.”
I actually find Szohr a surprising choice for this endeavor. She was only a series regular for the show’s first four seasons, didn’t appear in season 5 at all, and only returned for a cameo in the series finale. Then again, perhaps being slightly “outside” of the later seasons will make her a better interviewer. But has she even seen those episodes? (Also: The title isn’t necessarily a great choice since there are already other “Gossip Girl” podcasts with “XOXO” in the name.)
The teaser trailer reveals “Gossip Girl” creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will be participating, along with stars Ed Westwick (who also happens to be Szohr’s ex), Taylor Momsen, Kelly Rutherford, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Sebastian Stan. That isn’t a bad lineup to start.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the bandwidth to add another podcast to my weekly rotation. I was already exasperated when “Drama Queens” started last June. So I may or may not tune into tomorrow’s debut episode and then we’ll see what happens from there. (At least it’s not also dropping on Mondays like “9021OMG” and “Drama Queens” do.) If you do plan to listen each week, please keep me posted on how it goes!

Thanks to Melanie Rose of “90210 Hunts” and “9-OH! News” for drawing my attention to this: “Cobra Kai” creator and executive producer Jon Hurwitz gave a cryptic answer last month when asked about Hilary Swank (Carly, Beverly Hills, 90210) appearing on the show. (Fandom)
Casa Walsh from “Beverly Hills, 90210” and the Cohen home from “The O.C.” are highlighted in “The Most Iconic TV Houses Of All Time.” (Looper)
It should be noted the article inaccurately claims “much of the interior shots” were filmed at the real-life house in Altadena that provided the exteriors for Casa Walsh. That’s not true — after the initial episodes, the interiors were a set on the show’s soundstage in Van Nuys.

La La Anthony (Shay, BH90210) and Bianca Lawson (Nikki, Dawson’s Creek) are nominated for the NAACP Image Awards. (Deadline)
Also nominated: Jodie Turner-Smith, wife of Joshua Jackson (Pacey, Dawson’s Creek).

Watch Julie Bowen (Gwen, Dawson’s Creek) and Shailene Woodley (Kaitlin, The O.C.) in a new trailer for the HBO Max movie The Fallout, which premieres on Thursday. (YouTube)
The film was directed by Megan Park, who is the wife of Tyler Hilton (Chris, One Tree Hill) and who has previously helmed projects with teen drama stars (mainly holiday movies).
Benjamin McKenzie (Ryan, The O.C.) was on the “What Next: TBD” podcast to discuss his issues with celebrities shilling cryptocurrency. (Slate)
I love this part: “Ben, if you end up reduced to ‘Ryan from ‘The O.C.’ doesn’t want you to buy crypto,’ are you cool with that?” “Totally cool with that. I’m so cool with that.”
McKenzie is co-writing a new column for Slate called “Not Gonna Make It.” (Slate)

“The O.C.” and “One Tree Hill” theme songs are ranked in “The 25 best TV theme songs of the 21st century.” (Entertainment Weekly)
The intro notes: “To be eligible, a show’s first episode must have debuted in 2000 or later — sorry, ‘Dawson’s Creek.’”

Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) and Bethany Joy Lenz (Haley, One Tree Hill) will guest-star on an episode of “Good Sam,” which stars and is produced by Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill). (The Futon Critic)
I feel very cynical about this obvious publicity stunt… but I’ll still watch the episode when it airs.
Reminder that “Good Sam” is executive-produced by Jennie Snyder Urman (co-executive producer, 90210).
Burton, Lenz, and Bush were profiled in a new article titled, “Actresses From ‘One Tree Hill’ Reunite. Cue the Healing.” (The New York Times)
I really disagree with this comment from Burton: “What I’ve learned about the fans is that they don’t even necessarily care so much about the show anymore.” My largest interest is in the show itself, not in the cast.
I also find Bush’s comments here problematic: “It isn’t lost on us that the boys had fully formed characters with parents and that literally none of the girls on our show had parents. We were kind of treated like the early 2000s character versions of small dogs and purses. We were accessories for the boys.” The initial premise of the series, as the article accurately states, was “a show about two half brothers, Lucas and Nathan Scott, played by Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, who had the same father and different mothers in a small North Carolina town. The brothers went to the same high school but moved in different social circles. A shared love of basketball and a common dislike for their father brought them together, and their friends alongside.” Lucas and Nathan were the focal point of the series. The girls at that point were intended to be accessories. But the characters and their parental storylines were fleshed out as the series went on.
