As many of you know, a tragedy rocked the “One Tree Hill” and Wilmington communities over the last week.
Bevin Prince (Bevin, One Tree Hill) lost her husband William Friend when he was killed by a lightning strike in the Wilmington area on Sunday, July 3.
Though I live in Wilmington, I didn’t hear about the tragedy until the article linked above was posted in a “One Tree Hill” fan group on Facebook last Tuesday evening. By Friday, the mainstream media had picked up the news, with Prince’s loss getting international coverage.
Friend was the CEO of Bisnow, which posted a remarkable obituary about his career, upbringing, and life with Prince. A GoFundMe was created in Friend’s honor to start a memorial fund benefiting two causes he cared much about. Donations will go to the Special Operators Transition Foundation and to Recess, the outdoor cycling studio he and Prince opened here in Wilmington in 2020. As of this posting, more than $87,000 has been raised (I contributed a meager $100).
Several of Prince’s “One Tree Hill” co-stars posted tributes to Friend and to Prince on social media. Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) is listed as one of the GoFundMe’s top donors, as is JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Bree, Gossip Girl), Peter Kowalski (director and cinematographer, Dawson’s Creek / director and cinematographer, One Tree Hill), and Michelle Branch (who performed on “One Tree Hill”).
Prince now sadly joins the list of stars of who have tragically lost their significant others, an awful distinction that also includes Michelle Williams (Jen, Dawson’s Creek). I first met Prince when I ran into her at a local store in 2019, and then I had the pleasure of interviewing her in 2020. We spoke about founding Recess, and at one moment, Prince noted her husband had just walked in during our chat.
I really cannot fathom getting married and expecting to spend your life with someone, only to lose them at just 33 years old. (Friend would’ve been 34 on July 9 — we are just under a year apart in age, which makes the sudden end to his life feel all the more sharp.) I emailed Prince my condolences and was surprised to receive a reply less than a day later. What she must be going through right now is unimaginable.
While Recess was closed all of last week in the wake of Friend’s passing, it has since reopened, though understandably, Prince is not currently scheduled to lead any classes. (Learn more here.)
I really don’t know what else to say because there is nothing that can make this better or change the outcome of this tragedy. I know in the days ahead I will start thinking about this less and less. But Prince is going to bear this weight for the rest of her life. My heart is with her.

I was so sad to hear about Bevin’s husband. The first thing I had thought about was your interview with her and her husband had come home. I really loved Odette’s post about him on Instagram and Danieel’s (sorry, I’m sure I am spelling her name wrong). I donated also. So nice of her to respond to you so quickly… WOW.
