The “Beverly Hills, 90210” family is grieving.
There has been an outpouring of love, mostly among fans, for executive producer Jessica Klein, who died last week at 66 years young. Though I knew she was in grave health, it was no less gut-wrenching when her passing was announced.
As I previously shared, Klein died on July 13. That happens to be my late grandpa’s birthday. Her funeral was held on July 15, which is my birthday and the birthday of “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Brian Austin Green — how sad and strange that a producer’s funeral lined up with a cast member’s birthday. It’s extremely bittersweet to think about how the best day of one person’s life can be the worst of someone else’s. And death, generally and specifically, is something I really have trouble comprehending.
Fellow executive producers Charles Rosin and Larry Mollin shared some memories of Klein on last week’s “The Beverly Hills 90210 Show” podcast, which aired live just hours after her death. Jennie Garth (Kelly) and Tori Spelling (Donna) were the only cast members to post tributes that I saw.
One of the most moving things I read in the wake of Klein’s passing was something she herself wrote for The Jewish Woman. It’s an essay she penned, I believe in 2006, reflecting on the 1998 death of Steve Wasserman, her writing partner, former husband, and father of their daughter. Wasserman was also an executive producer of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and while I knew he died tragically in a sailing accident not long after they left the show, Klein lays it all out here in incredible, heartbreaking detail.
Now that Klein herself is gone too, the piece as a whole and the lessons she shared in it are all the more powerful. I admired Klein so much in life and perhaps now more so after death.
If you would like to honor Klein, please consider making a donation in her memory to Chabad of Greater Los Feliz. As her daughter noted, “Whenever anyone asked where to make a donation in her honor, this is always where she said to send it.” I made a donation that was a multiple of the number 18, as is common in our Jewish faith.
Coupled with the tragedy Bevin Prince (Bevin, One Tree Hill) recently suffered, there’s been a lot of sadness in the teen drama community lately. Hopefully there are brighter days ahead for us all — though I know many lives are irreparably changed.

Of course, Green wasn’t on “90210” — he was on “Beverly Hills, 90210.” Similarly, he met Vanessa Marcil (Gina, Beverly Hills, 90210) on “Beverly Hills, 90210” — not “90210.”

Best of the Rest
In case you missed my tweets: Mike White (producer, Dawson’s Creek), Jane Lynch (Mrs. Witter, Dawson’s Creek), Seth Rogen (Bob, Dawson’s Creek), Sebastian Stan (Carter, Gossip Girl), and the late Jessica Walter (Tabitha, 90210) all scored Emmy nominations. (Deadline)
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” featuring Peter Gallagher (Sandy, The O.C.), was also nominated.
And here’s one I missed the other day: John Coperman, who was a stunt coordinator for “Dawson’s Creek” and “One Tree Hill,” scored a nod too. (StarNews Online)

Peacock renewed “Dr. Death” for season 2, but Joshua Jackson (Pacey, Dawson’s Creek) isn’t expected to participate as the show will tackle a new story. (Deadline)

Adam Brody (Seth, The O.C.) and wife Leighton Meester (Blair, Gossip Girl) will star together in a remake of The River Wild. (Deadline)
I believe this will mark the fifth project they’ve starred in together.
Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill) shared the story of her wedding to Grant Hughes and the first photos with Vogue. (Vogue)
I figured a magazine deal was why Bush hadn’t publicly said anything about her wedding. They were waiting for the photos to be ready and the story to come out.
There are 98 photos posted — wow!
Bush and Hughes also collaborated on this essay: “Why the Right to an Abortion Matters for Every Person.” (Glamour)
I am unequivocally pro-choice, but I think “Abortion needs to be legal because I wouldn’t have met my husband if his ex-girlfriend didn’t have an abortion” is a really weird take.
Lee Norris (Mouth, One Tree Hill) and Colin Fickes (Jimmy, One Tree Hill) are the newest “One Tree Hill” cast members to sign on for the upcoming “A Week in Tree Hill” convention in Wilmington. (Facebook)
