Luke Perry and Sophia Bush have something in common that only recently occurred to me.
Perry first appeared on “Beverly Hills, 90210” in the show’s second episode and his character of Dylan McKay became a fan-favorite.
Bush first appeared on “One Tree Hill” in the show’s second episode and her character of Brooke Davis became a fan-favorite.
It’s striking that neither of them were in the pilots for their respective teen dramas, but each in many ways became the “face” of their shows in pop culture. So integral they were to these series, they are the first cast members to come to mind for some fans. And while Perry did leave “Beverly Hills, 90210” for a few seasons, he and Bush were both in their shows’ final episodes.
There are no directly comparable actors / characters from our other teen dramas. Sure, Kerr Smith’s Jack added to the original “Dawson’s Creek” foursome and remained a series regular through the series finale, but he didn’t join the show until season 2. Autumn Reeser’s Taylor augmented the “core four” on “The O.C.”, but her introduction wasn’t until season 3. Even on “90210,” Matt Lanter’s Liam — a pseudo-Dylan — indisputably became a core character, but he didn’t come on the scene until more than halfway through the first season.
That both “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “One Tree Hill” introduced characters in their second episode that went on to become synonymous with their shows is, to me, a remarkable teen drama fun fact and a surprising way Perry and Bush are connected.
