Those who know my media habits know I’m a big “Reliable Sources” fan. I follow the work of CNN’s Brian Stelter closely, and today I want to highlight something he wrote after last week’s horrific massacre in Texas.
I agree. After the heart-wrenching news broke, I kept saying to myself, “Unbelievable.” And then I realized, no — it’s actually all too believable. It’s not surprising anymore, sadly, that these things keep happening.
And while this is hardly a time to prop myself up, I do want to revisit what I wrote a little over a year ago. When I marked the 15th anniversary of the “One Tree Hill” school shooting episode in March 2021, I said:
“The number of school shootings dropped precipitously in 2020 only because nearly all schools were closed amidst the pandemic. There still remains a gun epidemic in this country, far too many stigmas surrounding mental health, and a problem with school bullying that is only going to return once students are back in classrooms full time. It all adds up to a powder keg that is destined to explode. And once again we’ll be asking ourselves how we got here. How we got to this point.”
Those comments were echoing in my brain last week, as was part of Lucas’ closing quote.
“What happened to us, that we now send our children out into the world like we send young men to war, hoping for their safe return but knowing that some will be lost along the way?”
What happened?
How did we get here?
I also received a few Google Alerts referencing this “One Tree Hill” episode after “Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson revealed she was getting pressure on social media to devote an installment of her series to a school shooting plot.
Brunson’s response was valid. It shouldn’t be up to television to solve this catastrophic issue, let alone a workplace comedy show of all things. But I still wholeheartedly recommend watching the “One Tree Hill” episode and believe it can make a difference. Not for everyone. Not everywhere. But for some. And in these desperate, devastating times, that should still count.
