Are you a grimoire girl?
Hilarie Burton is.
On my trip to The Roxbury last week, among the books I read was Burton’s Grimoire Girl.
A grimoire is sort of a magical version of a journal or a spiritual guidebook that one collects and passes on to others. As the subtitle of the book suggests — “A Memoir of Magic and Mischief” — Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) blended personal stories with tales of spells, mythology, and the supernatural to make her own grimoire.
Throughout the book, there were scattered references to “One Tree Hill” and Wilmington. At one point she referred to spending “twenty years battling repulsive monsters (*cough* our bosses on One Tree Hill *cough*).” There were a few paragraphs on the launch of “Drama Queens.” In another chapter, she wrote at length about her haunted house in Wilmington (and made a reference to Michelle Williams and “Dawson’s Creek”).
There was a paragraph devoted to letterwriting with Bethany Joy Lenz (Haley, One Tree Hill) and a mention of postcards from John Doe (Mick, One Tree Hill). And in analyzing the planets, Burton explained why Earth is such a fit for Lenz and Jupiter for Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill). Bush was later described as Burton’s “activism muse.”
I can’t say I subscribe to any of Burton’s witchy beliefs or magical practices. But I do share her interest in preserving memories. At my parents’ house, I have shoeboxes and Ziplocs filled with mementos from high school and college, ranging from notes I passed back and forth with friends to movie ticket stubs. (Funnily enough, Burton has also kept high school notes from friends stored in shoeboxes.) In Wilmington, the drawers of my nightstand are a chaotic mess of random treasures — all things I can’t bear to part with but wouldn’t mean anything to anyone but me.
Much of Burton’s book, frankly, I could do without. I was most moved by the final chapter and the afterword, but I won’t spoil what those are about (except to say they don’t have to do with “One Tree Hill”). If you love Burton and/or all things magic, you’ll probably love Grimoire Girl. Otherwise? Skip it.
