Did you know there’s a real Dawson Creek?
Dawson Creek — not to be confused with “Dawson’s Creek” — is a city in British Columbia. This Canadian locale was incorporated first as a village in 1936 and then as a city in 1958. In other words, it existed decades before The WB premiered a teen drama with a very similar name.
The city is named after an actual creek that itself is named after George Mercer Dawson, a Canadian scientist. As of 2016, its population totaled more than 12,000 — much bigger than Capeside! The area is served by multiple media outlets, which is primarily why I’m writing about it today.
Over the years, my “Dawson’s Creek” Google alert has flagged stories here and there about Dawson Creek the city rather than “Dawson’s Creek” the show. But over the last couple of weeks, something else has started to happen. Google is sending me article after article published online by the Dawson Creek Mirror.
The publication isn’t new — it dates back to 1980 — but it must be ranking differently on Google because it’s suddenly all up in my Google Alerts. Just for kicks, I decided to keep a tally for the last week. From the morning of November 23 through the night of November 29, I received 30 separate “Dawson’s Creek” Google Alerts that contained a total of 46 Dawson Creek Mirror articles.
That’s not the only wire Google Alerts has crossed. Earlier this year, my “The O.C.” alert occasionally started turning up stories about “Law & Order: OC” — that is, “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” And ever since “Selling the OC” was announced earlier this month, articles about that are getting caught in my Google Alert filter too.
Of course, for years I’ve been getting served content from the OC Register, and I tend to also get news stories out of Bangladesh when “the OC,” or the “officer in charge,” is cited. So now we’ll just add the Dawson Creek Mirror to the mix.
If only all of these articles were about “Dawson’s Creek” and “The O.C.” instead.
