Teen Drama Links for September 20, 2022
After multiple delays, I finally watched Alone Together — starring, written by, directed by, and produced by Katie Holmes.
I don’t watch every single thing our teen drama stars are in, but I definitely wanted to see this movie because of Holmes’ extensive, multi-hyphenate work on it. I’ve also been a sucker for her co-star, Jim Sturgess, since Across the Universe. Interestingly, he gave me Milo Ventimiglia / “This Is Us” vibes in this, and I’m a sucker for that too.
Though the film was set amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the plot seemed straight out of the kind of Hallmark movies we’ve seen countless times: Two strangers end up stuck in the same place and initially clash before falling in love. The story unfolded in a rather expected way, though it was a bit implausible to me that the large Airbnb residence in which they were quarantining only had one bedroom and one bathroom.
Holmes sings in the film, which had me thinking about the teen drama stars who are also singers, and there is an at-home karaoke montage that had me thinking about the at-home karaoke montage on “Dawson’s Creek.” As noted in a previous “Teen Drama Links,” Holmes’ daughter Suri also sings for the movie, though she isn’t seen.
The film currently has a rating of just 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, and while I don’t always agree with RT, I do here. But I liked Holmes’ prior directorial effort, All We Had, and I am still looking forward to her next, Rare Objects.
Holiday alert: Due to Rosh Hashanah, next week’s “Teen Drama Links” will come out on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.
