I spent two days last week watching Hunger Games marathons on SYFY and had an epiphany.
Are Gale-Katniss-Peeta another version of Dawson-Joey-Pacey?
Like Joey with Dawson, Katniss often feels reluctant to move on from Gale because of their childhood connection and the expectation that they’d one day commit to each other.
But like Joey with Pacey, Katniss experiences feelings and situations with Peeta that she never had with Gale.
I kept thinking of Joey telling Pacey, “Dawson knows my past. My future lies with you.” Is that not Katniss, Gale, and Peeta?!
And Joey also telling Pacey, “Pacey... I love you. You know that. And it’s very real. It’s so real that it’s kept me moving, mostly running from it, never ready for it. And I love Dawson. He’s my soulmate. He’s tied to my childhood, and it’s a love that is pure and eternally innocent. I can’t be let off the hook because I might just get the notion that it’s okay to keep running.” Again, is that not Katniss, Gale, and Peeta?!
Thankfully, both women got it right in the end.
Also, I realize I’m comparing a life-and-death story to, well, “Dawson’s Creek,” but the show was very much about life and death too. No doubt the relationship situations felt like life and death to Dawson, Joey, and Pacey. And no doubt The Hunger Games love triangle fits right into the teen drama genre.
Want to see for yourself? SYFY is airing the Hunger Games movies again tonight, Wednesday and Thursday. Happy Hunger Games!
