Mitch Leery lives!
Okay, no. He’s definitely still dead.
But John Wesley Shipp is alive and well!
I know this first-hand because on Saturday, I had the honor of seeing Shipp at the Wilmington Geek Expo.
This was our first time meeting in person, more than 13 years after Shipp was so generous with his time on the phone when we spoke for an interview for the original TeenDramaWhore.
As I recently shared, I’m generally not interested in fan conventions, largely due to their cost. However, my VIP ticket for this event cost a whopping $22 — roughly the same amount I spend regularly on tickets and snacks at the movies. A picture with Shipp cost another $40, but even so, that $62 is significantly less than what “90s Con” and the “One Tree Hill” conventions have charged.
All that to say, for me, this was money well spent!
I was accompanied by my friend Lisa Barrett, who happens to be the biggest “Dawson’s Creek” fan I know. It was not only a pleasure to talk with Shipp myself, but I also got such a kick out of watching Lisa share her fandom with him.
I was the only person wearing a mask at the expo — at least, a mask due to COVID precautions. Plenty of people were masked for their cosplay. But thanks to our VIP tickets, we were in and out in 45 minutes flat. However, the festivities weren’t over.
Lisa and I, along with her husband, then went to Hell’s Kitchen, which I recently wrote about in my look at the teen drama music venues. Though the entire establishment was used on the show (and, in fact, created for that purpose), we specifically sat in what we call the “Dawson’s Creek” booth due to the memorabilia above the table. Funnily enough but not surprising, as we were dining, a group of “One Tree Hill” fans came in wearing Ravens and Keith Scott Body Shop gear. Living in Capeside / Tree Hill really is something!
And how’s this for amazing? When I pulled out of the convention center’s parking lot and flipped on the radio, The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” was playing — the very same song used at the end of the “Dawson’s Creek” pilot.
It was all meant to be.
By the way, Shipp frequently attends events like these, so I recommend following him on Facebook if you’d like to be notified of upcoming appearances.
Now just one question remains: Will I see Joshua Jackson while he’s back in Wilmington filming his new series? Cross your fingers and toes…
