Teen Drama Links for March 21, 2023
Raise your hand if you had no interest in going to “90s Con.”
::raises hand::
This may surprise you given that a significant part of last weekend’s event revolved around my all-time favorite television show, “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
But with each passing year, I’ve become more and more turned off by these fan conventions.
My distaste primarily stems from the small fortune it often costs to participate in these events. If the convention isn’t where you live, you have the expense of travel and lodging right off the bat. Hundreds of dollars. Then you have to pay for admission and pay for the photo ops you want. Hundreds more dollars.
Even the “One Tree Hill” conventions that take place in Wilmington, where I live and therefore would have no travel costs besides parking, would still cost me hundreds. I can’t justify spending that kind of money. It simply isn’t in my best interest. Plus, celebrities charging to take pictures with them just makes me feel uneasy. There is something gross about it to me.
The other issue is that whether I meet the casts of my favorite shows has no bearing on my fandom. There was a time, a long time, when that was all I wanted. I used to have dreams on a fairly regular basis of being surprised by the “Beverly Hills, 90210” cast and collapsing into sobs.
Now? Eh. I feel no need or desire to meet any cast members from the teen dramas or anything else (disclosure: I’ve met some over the years through the course of my career). I don’t think whether I spend obscene amounts of money to meet the stars is any reflection of my love for these shows. It doesn’t mean I love them any less, just as it doesn’t mean that the fans who do attend conventions love them any more.
I made a similar point in an essay back in 2020. I also wrote another essay shortly after about meeting your idols and discovering, well, they’re just normal people and perhaps we shouldn’t be putting them on pedestals. I love these series with every ounce of my being. The shows themselves deserve to be on pedestals.
For those that did go to “90s Con” and enjoyed themselves, I’m truly happy for you. You did something you wanted to do and I applaud that. Me, I was perfectly content getting glimpses of the event online from the comfort of my couch (and you’ll find coverage below). My FOMO was rather minimal.
All that said, on April 1, I am attending the Wilmington Geek Expo, where John Wesley Shipp of “Dawson’s Creek” will be the guest of honor. With tickets, including fees, costing a mere $22, well, that was a reasonable price I could easily afford with no regrets.
It will be particularly meaningful to connect with Shipp in person more than 10 years after our phone interview for the original TDW. Stay tuned for a full report!

At “90s Con,” Shannen Doherty (Brenda, Beverly Hills, 90210) appeared on a panel for “Charmed,” but did not join the panel for “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which included Jennie Garth (Kelly), Tori Spelling (Donna), Jason Priestley (Brandon), Ian Ziering (Steve), and Rebecca Gayheart (Toni). However, Doherty did join Garth, Spelling, Priestley and Ziering for photos.

The Blu-Ray edition will have “more than seven hours of new bonus features.” It’s unclear to me whether the DVD edition will have that new content too or the same bonus content that’s on the original DVD release.

Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill) is apparently bothered that media outlets that picked up comments she and Hilarie Burton (Peyton, One Tree Hill) made on “Drama Queens” last week focused on Burton revealing Chad Michael Murray (Lucas, One Tree Hill) confronted “One Tree Hill” creator Mark Schwahn over assaulting Burton instead of focusing on their comments about abuse. (Twitter)
I understand why outlets have focused on this aspect. It’s new, newsworthy information. Burton and Bush discussing the abuse they’ve suffered has been covered by the media extensively, including last November. Murray’s involvement was a revelation. Why wouldn’t the media report on this new admission? It doesn’t, to me, take away at all from what else the women discussed.
Burton was on “The Back Room with Andy Ostroy” podcast. (Apple Podcasts)
The podcast’s description is the first time I’ve seen a title for Burton’s next book.
