One day, I sat down to watch Netflix’s “One Day.”
Okay, it was actually over several days because I’m not great at bingeing.
But the end result of watching all 14 episodes?
Full-on sobbing.
I can’t say I’m surprised. The same thing happened when I read the book and when I saw the film adaptation. Why would the TV series be any different?
For those unfamiliar, “One Day” — in all its forms — tells the story of Emma and Dexter over 20 years. The conceit is that their story is only told through lens of one day per year, hence the title. You visit their lives on the same day each year, year after year, and see where they are and where they aren’t.
And of all days the story could take place, the day chosen by author David Nicholls just happens to be my birthday — July 15. That has always made me feel deeply connected to the tale.
In terms of the new Netflix TV series specifically, I was excited to see various scenes brought to life and how they would compare to the film version. I admit I struggled with the accents at times, which I know makes me sound very uncultured. Ambika Mod was wonderful as Emma — she actually reminded me of Ayo Edebiri in her facial expressions, mannerisms, and comedic delivery. I do wish they aged Leo Woodall’s Dexter more as time passed, as they did Jim Sturgess in the movie. (Though it is amazing how well changing hairstyles and wardrobe can convey the passage of time.)
Perhaps most striking as I watched was the similarities I saw to one of my other obsessions: “Normal People.” Both series follow two young adult love interests over several years, jumping in and out of their lives. “Normal People,” which unfolds over roughly five years, starts during senior year of high school. “One Day” begins on the last night of college.
“One Day” has a lot less sex (and a lot less graphic sex, at that), but they cover very similar emotional ground. “One Day,” however, has a lot more humor to it. The New York Times aptly described it as “a more upbeat ‘Normal People,’” which feels right, but “One Day” gets pretty dark, too, at times. Make no mistake: It will rip your heart out.
I’m not sure yet whether “One Day” will become an annual rewatch for me like “Normal People” has.
But it’s clear. Whether book, movie, or now TV show... this story just gets to me.
