The “Dancing with the Stars” tour is nothing short of phenomenal.
Though attending last week’s Long Island show meant missing the Golden Globes, I am so glad my mom and I went. Below, in my “reaction post” style, are my notes and thoughts.
It was very surreal seeing dancers I’ve watched on television for years now dance live right in front of me.
I loved that every pro got ample spotlight time. It felt like a pretty equal experience, apart from Emma Slater hosting.
In addition to Emma, the pro cast included Britt Stewart, Alan Bersten, Gleb Savchenko, Brandon Armstrong, Sasha Farber, Alexa Warr, and Kateryna Klishyna.
I felt bad for the lone troupe member who wasn’t introduced. I could hear people whispering and wondering who she was. I didn’t know myself.
After some online digging, I found her name: JJ Rabone.
It was very interesting to see Emma and Sasha partnered together sometimes, especially in a song about love.
Despite being Emma’s co-host, Gabby Windey had a fairly small role, popping in and out and not doing that much dancing. Special guest Vinny Guadagnino was around even less.
The first half of the show was longer than the second and my two favorite routines of the night were both in the first half — an emotional contemporary with Alexis and Brandon and a romantic waltz (at least I think it was a waltz…) with Alexis and Sasha.
There was a really funny segment where Emma explained, and everyone else demonstrated, what each day of the week is like for a “DWTS” pro.
Emma, as we’ve increasingly seen, is very funny. But it also amazes me how all of these people aren’t just dancing — they’re acting too. They’re acting out all the emotions and it’s really impressive.
I can’t stop marveling over how many steps they had to memorize for this. On any given “DWTS” week, the pros do perhaps three routines. This had to be at least 30 routines. I have no idea how they keep it all straight!
Not to mention all the quick costume changes!
My only regret is that I didn’t take any pictures, apart from one of the stage before the show started. I feel like at many past events, I’ve been too focused on getting photos and videos instead of being in the moment. So I made a concerted effort this time to keep my phone away and just watch what was right in front of me instead of viewing it through a camera lens. However, as the show was ending and everyone was on stage for the final bow, I wanted to get a shot, but just as I took my phone out, the lights went off and the show was over. I'm sad I don’t have a picture to mark the occasion, but am grateful for my non-photographic memories.
Also, it’s kinda crazy that the day of my show was the same day Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson welcomed their baby. What timing!
Speaking of Chmerkovskiy, I previously saw him, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Peta Murgatroyd, Tony Dovolani, and Zendaya perform at an event in 2014, where I also interviewed all of them. Unfortunately, the articles I wrote are no longer accessible in their original form, but I was able to locate a few of them via the Wayback Machine if anyone’s interested.
