Teen Drama Links for June 28, 2022
My love for “Love, Victor” is a victory. A triumph. Something unexpected.
That’s because when I saw Love, Simon in theaters, I was a little let down. Don’t get me wrong — I liked it. But it didn’t move me as much as I expected it to given how much praise and hype the movie was receiving. And it was even directed by “Dawson’s Creek” executive producer Greg Berlanti! Still, I walked away with mixed feelings.
So when the sequel series “Love, Victor” came about, I again had, well, mixed feelings. I didn’t even have Hulu at the time, but I knew Sophia Bush (Brooke, One Tree Hill) would have a role in it. Would it be worth the investment?
Thanks to an extremely kind friend who surprised me with a Hulu gift card, I decided to give it a shot — and I am so glad I did. I quickly fell in love with the series, from its theme song to Mateo Fernandez as Victor’s little brother. And over the last three years, it’s become a wonderful Pride Month tradition to enjoy a new season of the show.
Of course, this month’s installment was the series’ last, so watching it was a very bittersweet experience. It was amazing to reflect on how much I’ve grown to love Mason Gooding and his character, how I enjoyed Bush’s character when I’m not often a fan of her roles, how wild it was to see Rachel Hilson here versus on “This Is Us,” and how I kind of wish I had my own Felix (and how something about Anthony Turpel reminds me of Harry Styles, whom I love). There wasn’t nearly enough Adrian in the final episodes, but I did appreciate the Northwestern reference (both Berlanti and I are alums).
Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who were executive producers on “This Is Us,” created “Love, Victor” and served as showrunners after writing the “Love, Simon” screenplay. They did a remarkable job with “Love Victor,” and I’d probably like “Love, Simon” more if I rewatched it today. “Love, Victor” was an unexpected treat the last few years and I have no doubt myself and countless others are better off for having watched it.
Stay tuned for my thoughts on “The Summer I Turned Pretty” next week. Spoiler alert: I *LOVED* it.
