Before Barbie, there was “One Tree Hill.”
And before Gloria, there was Anna.
Sound familiar? That was Anna in episode 2.08, “Truth, Bitter Truth.”
“One Tree Hill” dropped those truth bombs back in in 2004 — almost 20 years before America Ferrera’s Gloria gave a similar (and much longer) monologue in Barbie.
I have to admit the similarity didn’t dawn on me until I saw someone post about it in a “One Tree Hill” fan group on Facebook recently.
While I hardly think Barbie screenwriters Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach consciously copied from “One Tree Hill” or the episode’s writer, Stacy Rukeyser, I do think it’s further evidence that the show — and the teen dramas at large — don’t get the credit they deserve.
I’ve already written at length about why the teen dramas aren’t taken seriously and how a lot of it has to do with bias and ignorance. Here, with Barbie, I think it’s definitely the case of the latter. “One Tree Hill” had fewer than 5 million viewers in its second season. While countless more have watched this specific episode since then thanks to a combination of syndication, DVDs and streaming, I highly doubt it was ever on Gerwig and Baumbach’s radar.
In fact, I highly doubt “One Tree Hill,” as a whole, was ever on their radar in any meaningful or serious way. Most of the viewing public has seen Barbie, but most of the viewing public has not seen “One Tree Hill.” So they have no idea that scenes and messages like this exist and that they existed two decades ago. And that’s a shame.
“One Tree Hill” and its ilk deserve recognition for moments and dialogue like this. If only more people paid attention.
